Grace was born in March 1888 in Barking St Mary.  Grace's father was Arthur John THORPE and her mother was Elizabeth LAMBERT.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry THORPE and Mary MULLET; her maternal grandparents were Thomas LAMBERT and Harriet HARVEY. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Arthur, Frederick, Sydney, Harry, Kathleen, Augusta and Eve.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
