Arthur was born in March 1882 in Barking St Mary and his baptism took place on March 12th, 1882 in Needham.  Arthur's father was Arthur John THORPE and his mother was Elizabeth LAMBERT.  His paternal grandparents were Henry THORPE and Mary MULLET; his maternal grandparents were Thomas LAMBERT and Harriet HARVEY. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Frederick, Sydney, Harry, Grace, Kathleen, Augusta and Eve.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
