Gertrude was born in 1891 in Leeds.  Gertrude's father was William SWALLOW and her mother was Emmeline HEPWORTH.  Her paternal grandparents were John SWALLOW and Margaret FIRTH. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, John, Annie and Jane.  She was the youngest of the five children.
