Alfred was born in March 1881 in Leeds.  Alfred's father was William SWALLOW and his mother was Emmeline HEPWORTH.  His paternal grandparents were John SWALLOW and Margaret FIRTH. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Annie, Jane and Gertrude.  He was the oldest of the five children.
