Phyllis was born in 1915 in Doncaster. Phyllis' father was Joseph Henry ROWBOTTOM and her mother was Margaret Ann WAGSTAFF. Her paternal grandparents were John ROWBOTTOM and Elizabeth Ann GRAY; her maternal grandparents were Frederick George WAGSTAFF and Sarah Ellen WYNNE. She had a brother and six sisters, named Joseph, Edith, Alice, Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Stella. She was the youngest of the eight children.
