- From 1920 Francis' occupation was Photographer full time in services in Newbury.
  - Occupation Notes
    - Francis Henry Rolfe was living at 17 New Market Street, Newbury in 1911.
      
      First the location:
      
      New Market Street has lost its newness and is now Market Street.
      
      No 17 is one of the few buildings there in 1911 that have not been demolished. In 1911 it was owned by the St Bartholomew's Foundation (ie the local grammar school). They sold it in 1921.
      
      It stood on the site of a pub called the Coach & Horses - or rather part of the Coach & Horses' yard. When the new market street was created in 1870ish the pub rocketed in value as the small street frontage on Cheap St was supplemented by quite a long frontage on the new street. So they demolished the pub and built a row of shops called Victoria Place.

      And now Mr Rolfe:
      
      There is a booklet published by Newbury Museum (author Paul Cannon) on Newbury Photographers. This shows F A or F H Rolfe at Market St (1905-1911), 17 Victoria Place, Market St (1910-1911) and 16 Victoria St, Northbrook St (1914-1917).
      
      17 Victoria Place is the same as 17 Market St - Market St was not actually numbered at that time while the new block was.
      
      Victoria St is a grand and relatively short lived name for Jack St. Jack St has also been demolished - and is currently being further developed. In modern terms it is an alley running down the south side of Marks & Spencers in Northbrook St and the south side of their carpark. It may re-emerge over the next couple of years as a new street of shops in a large redevelopment of the area to the east of Northbrook St (google Parkway Newbury if you are interested).
      
      Jack St was not a high class neighbourhood (though far from the worst part of town). Mr Rolfe was probably not one of the top photographers in town.
      
      Paul's booklet also has a paragraph on Rolfe: Rolfe FH: The address given on his photographs is always 'York Road' even though he was living elsewhere. 6 York Road was the address of his father's (Henry Rolfe) dairy business. The initials FA occur in a series of directories and are an error for FH
      
      The last mention of him being in 1917 supports the idea that he signed up. The RFC would be an obvious place to send a photographer as they would need lots of them as observers in the aircraft or technicians on the ground to quickly process the thousands of photographs that must have been taken.

      And finally:
      
      Newbury (aka West Berkshire) Museum has a very nice photograph of F H Rolfe and his family (wife & 5 kids). It is a copy of a photograph taken in 1919 - apparently by a brother of F H after F H had set up the camera. The museum's accession no. is NEBYM:1991.101.
  From June 19th, 1917 to April 30th, 1920 his occupation was Labourer full time in public administration for Royal Flying Corps.
