William was born on March 13th, 1797 in Orpington and his christening took place there on April 14th, 1797.  William's father was John JEAL and his mother was Susannah WHIFFEN.  His paternal grandparents were William JEAL and Elizabeth TODMAN. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Adolphus, Alpheus, John, Charles, Tiras, Richard, Phillip, Harvey and Anne.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
