James was born in 1795 in Orpington and his christening took place there on July 12th, 1795.  James' father was Edward JEAL and his mother was Mary.  His paternal grandparents were William JEAL and Elizabeth TODMAN. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Edward, William, Thomas, Jemima, Elizabeth, Sophia, Hannah, Henrietta and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
