John was born in November 1779 in Gedding and his christening took place there on November 24th, 1779.  John's father was Samuel GOULD and his mother was Alice ARMSTRONG. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, William, William, Isaac, Thomas, Sarah, Alice, Mary, Phyllis and Susan.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
