William was born in 1788 in Stratfield Saye.  William's father was John COX and his mother was Elizabeth GRANTHAM. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Christian, Charles, Richard, George, Elizabeth, Sarah, Harriet and Maggie.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
