Walter was born in 1873 in Beech Hill.  Walter's father was Edward COX and his mother was Ann WHEELER.  His paternal grandparents were Richard COX and Keziah HATTO; his maternal grandparents were Daniel WHEELER and Charlotte ALLEN. He had six brothers and a sister, named Samuel, George, William, John, Arthur, Albert and Edith.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, Alfred, Henry, Benjamin, Edwin and Mary.
