James was born in 1823 in Stratfield Saye.  James' father was George COX and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were John COX and Elizabeth GRANTHAM. He had four brothers and a sister, named Joseph, George, Richard, Benjamin and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
