Leslie BIRD

Taken in 1924 in Gibraltar.

Leslie was born in 1906 in Thingoe. Leslie's father was James Thomas BIRD and his mother was Kate Elizabeth. His paternal grandparents were Abraham BIRD and Anne FLINT. He had a brother named Phillip. He was the older of the two children. He died in an accident or as a result of an injury, on board S.S. BLYTHMOOR and was interned in Gibraltar, at the age of 18 in 1924 in Sea. His burial was in Gibraltar.

      The Blythmoor. a tramp steamer of some 6582 grt. OPerated by the Morrline/Runciman. Travelled through the Panama canal at various times. Seaboard Shipping Company. maybe leased to another shipping line.
      
      Was attacked by the Germans at Narvick, Norway and sunk.

      The Blythmoor was built at the Pallion shipyard in Sunderland and launched in 1922. It appears to have been on the UK - South Africa run, as well as passing through the Panama Canal.
      
      She was part of a convoy in 1939 /40 and was originally seized in 1940 at Narvik, but was sunk at her moorings by either British destroyers or bombers.
      
      The wreck was removed from the harbour in 1953.
