James was born in February 1626 in Claydon and his christening took place there on February 23rd, 1626.  James' father was Edmund BIRD and his mother was Priscilla HOWELL.  His maternal grandparents were Richard HOWELL and Agnes. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Edmund, Ann and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Edmund, Richard, Robert and Elizabeth.
