Mary was born in 1845 in Beech Hill.  Mary's father was Joseph APPLETON and her mother was Charlotte WELCH.  Her paternal grandparents were William APPLETON and Lucy KEEP; her maternal grandparents were Unknown and Miriam WELCH. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Henry, William, Thomas, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
