Joseph was born in 1832 in Beech Hill.  Joseph's father was Joseph APPLETON and his mother was Charlotte WELCH.  His paternal grandparents were William APPLETON and Lucy KEEP; his maternal grandparents were Unknown and Miriam WELCH. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, William, Thomas, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
