Elizabeth was born in 1826 in Stratfield Saye.  Elizabeth's father was Joseph APPLETON and her mother was Charlotte WELCH.  Her paternal grandparents were William APPLETON and Lucy KEEP; her maternal grandparents were Unknown and Miriam WELCH. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Henry, William, Thomas, Charlotte and Mary.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
