In 1841, Samuel, 45 (and Alice, 45), recorded as a Fuller when John was born. Fuller, a worker who cleanses wool through the process of fulling

WARNING: There's another Samuel Mather who was an Iron Moulder with sons William, Ralph and George.
1791 - 1854 Samuel Mather 63 63 Samuel's father lived in Dean in 1793 where sister Maria was born, but by 1795 was in Great Bolton. Nanny's baptism of 1799 shows the family in Ainsworth parish.

Samuel lived in Halliwell.  Sons Isaac and John both married at Deane (1834 and 1837) with Halliwell recorded as the abode for John.

From 1818 to after 1829, another Samuel Mather and wife Ellen was a Moulder, living at 63 (and later 67) Spring Gardens (see trade directories), then Dawes St in 1841.  This was not our Samuel who was a weaver at Waterloo in 1841, although his son John did work at the Iron works and sister Maria was at Spring Gardens in 1843.

Recorded as John Mather's father on his wedding certificates of 1837 and 1843

Samuel Kay was witness to Elizabeth's wedding to John Mather in 1843.  Still living in Little Bolton in 1851.

In 1841, Samuel and Alice (both 50) were at Waterloo. Four children; Alice (20), Happy (15), Samuel (15) and George (13) were with them as well as James Tyldsley (probably a lodger).  At this time, there’s a population of over 613K, about 59K were cotton weavers, and 800 silk weavers.  About 2,600 are involved with spinning.

James probably lived at Toppings, Turton (unconfirmed, based on brothers Isaac and Solomon.

James was 29 when he married Happy. He may have been married before, quite possibly to Betty Lyon who died in 1789, aged only 20. James had 1 or 2 young children to care for and needed a wife quickly.  James signed his own name on both marriages, although the signatures are not a good match at least he was educatred and sign his name (5 years apart).

James and his future wife Happy were both baptised at Bank Street, Bolton although James was from Turton. Richard and Ann Mather had only been married a few months, so this may be why!

In 1799, Living in Ainsworth when daughter Nanny was baptised.

1804 - 1850 James Mather 46 46 James's grandparents may have been Betty and Thomas (as he was buried with them).

James's father may have been John (b.~1781), a farmer, living nearby (same district 5) in 1841, aged 60.

In 1841, James (a carter) and Martha (both 35) were at Spring Row, Breightmet with John (9), Elizabeth (7), Ellin (2).  James and Martha also had James Livesey (20) with them.

Another James & Martha Mather nee Kay, a silk weaver from Entwistle had William Kay (48) with them in 1841.
James Mather Margaret Stockton 1813 - 1895 Jane Welsby 82 82 John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow St, Little Bolton in 1841 and 1851.

Jane lived in Little Bolton to the ripe old age of 80.
1837 John Mather 1839 - 1839 Ann Mather 4m 4m 1839 Thomas Mather Thomas was with parents John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow St, Little Bolton in 1841 and 1851 <male> Mather <female> Challiner 1842 Mary Ann Mather 1842 Sarah Mather <male> Mather <female> Twisse 1844 Margaret Mather 1844 - 1845 Robert Mather 6m 6m <male> Mather <female> Warburton 1846 Mary J Mather 1847 Nancy Mather Oct 1867, Another Nancy Mather daughter of Hannah married James Bowen at Bolton, St George 1829 - 1851 William Crosland Mather 22 22 John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow Street, Little Bolton in 1841 and 1851.

In 1841, James (14) and Brother William (12) were with parents John and Jane.  James and William are not their sons they only just married in Oct 1829, and Jane is too young to have them.

In 1851, William Mather (21) is a servant and Druggist in E Bolton for Samuel Chadwich, a doctor of medicine. Betty Mather, another servant (29) is probably unrelated as from Blackrod.

1827 - 1875 James Mather 48 48 James and William were baptised in Bolton, the sons of William Mather and Martha (Bleakley).  They came from a prosporus background and were professional people.  William was an Attorney of Law,. who died in 1835.  His wife Martha remarried in 1838, so the boys probably went into service.  James became a druggist.

In 1841, James and William (14 & 12) were not with their parents.  Instead, they were with John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow Street, Little Bolton whom had just married in Oct 1829 (so too young to be their parents).  They may be adopted by John, a relative.

In 1851, James is not with the family and may may have married Mary Stott at Deane in 1851, but there are no possible Bolton marriages.
1818 - 1895 Rachel Mather 77 77 In 1841, after their father died, sisters Rachel and Caroline Mather (aged about 20), were working together as F.S. at St George’s Terrace, Little Bolton for Thomas and Sophia Walmsley.

Rachel had 7 children: Their first, Matha was born in Liverpool in 1845.  The family then moved to Ormskirk where Edwin, Frederick, Mary Emma, and Caroline were born, before returning to Bolton in about 1857.  They then had Sophia (1859) and Thomas (1861).
1820 - 1902 Caroline Priestley Mather 82 82 In 1841, after their father died, sisters Rachel and Caroline Mather (aged about 20), were working together as F.S. at St George’s Terrace, Little Bolton for Thomas and Sophia Walmsley. 1801 - 1871 James Mather 69 69 In 1826 James (a weacer) had a bastard child born upon the body of Alice Hartley of Chorley and was ordered to pay 1s 6d per week (plus other costs) towards her maintenance.  He married her two years later (see attached images of the orders).

1835-39 (when Eliz and Mary baptised) James was living at 1 Commission Street, Bolton
1785 - 1841 James Mather 56 56 WARNING: There are several problems with the placement of James here.  Instead, he may be the son of Isaac and Alice.

Two James's, son of James and Betty got baptised.  First Methodist, and then CoE (both at Turton, 4 months appart).  One was the son of Betty Knowles, the other of Betty Lyon.

James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.

James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm!

In 1804, Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18.  He was discharged in 1818. This must be another!

Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).

In 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle.  Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage).  With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).

In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63).  She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.
1792 - 1879 Alice Mather 87 87 Family name was Mather BEFORE Alice was married, so a possible cousin or second cousin.  The name Mather was confirmed from the Mariage record and the Banns in the Bolton Library.

This is the only Alice found born in Bolton of similar age.  She appears to have no (baptised) brothers or sisters, which is strange as she was born 13 years after her parents marriage (so could be wrong birth record or records lost, or a widow).

Could she be a widower, married before Samuel in 1810 (after 1804)?  Cant be Alice Makinson that married Nathan Mather in 1809 or Alice Calderbank married Thomas Mather in 1805 as they had a long and fruitfull marriages. There are no other candidated for an Alice from Turton.

Alice, wife is present on 1841 and 1851 census with Samuel and family.

The 1851 census shows Samuel and Alice (both 60) at 4 Simpson Street, was from Turton.  Her son George (21, a Collier), daughter Happy Barrow (married, 28, piecer) and grandaughter Maria Barrow (7) were living with them.

In 1871, Alice was a boarder at 67 Blackbank Street, living with her daughter Happy and Phioneas Shuttleworth and family. 3 doors away at No 73 was her son Samuel and Ann Mather.  Between them at No 71 was James Cunliffe Hamer and his wife Happy Hamer.  How is this other Happy person related?
1747 - 1817 Joseph Mather 70 70 Joseph was not born in Bolton, but was in Little Bolton in 1817 when he died, aged 70. Also, there are no Bolton baptisms of children of father Joseph so he must be from elsewhere.

Joseph possibly came from Warrington, (with Wife Margery, and Alice, Saml) or Manchester (with wife Betty, and Mary, Thomas) or (with wife Ann and Sarah), although there are other possibilities.

Since he named a son Zacharias, it is assumed he is the son of Zacharias Mather, a very uncommon name!
1833 Mary Mather Mary Leser, daughter, was with mother Jane Mather in 1891.
Hhe had a daughter Catherine (aged 16 in 1891).

On 23 sep 1860, Mary married Edmund Lever. Edmund died in 1885.

In 1891, after Mary's husbad Edmund had died, Mary Lever was back living with her mother Jane Mather at 17 Oliver Row
1835 - 1902 John Mather 67 67 John was with parents John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow St, Little Bolton in 1841 and 1851 1850 Jane Mather The "twins", Esther and Jane age 1 in 1851 survived infancy as both were alive aged 11 with their parents in 1861. However, there is no birth registration for such twins. Esther is registered in 1849, and Jane appears to be illegitimate, registered in 1850.

In 1861, Jane is shown to be a granddaughter, aged 11
1792 - 1872 James Mather 79 79 There's a James that married Ellen Mercer in 1797, and had their children baptised at Dukes Alley Chapel (NC) but this is obviously another.  From 1806, James's father Solomon also started using Bank Street.

28 Nov 1836, James married Mary Heaton.  Wright Crompton, b.~1810 the L.B. Blacksmith was witness.

James Mather is on the 1841, 1851, 1861 (married to Mary) at Pocket, Rumworth, and 1871 census (widowed), born Turton with the correct age.

In 1861, James and Mary (68 & 69) are at Pocket, Rumworth.  James and Betsey Banks (24 & 26) are neighbours, with a possible DNA trail..

The 1871 census also shows James (78, Wid) is with his sister Ann (50) born Hall-i’th’-Wood (the same as brother Solomon).  Ann Scott (41) is a Lodger.

James (45) and Mary (50) ware living at Pocket, Rumworth, (There's a Pocket Nook Rd at Chew Moor), Rumworth in 1841, 1851 and his wife Mary died there in 1871.

John Mather (15, MS) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841.  He was probably James's son from an earlier marriage.
1774 - 1848 James Mather 73 73 James may be born Rivington as baptism date matches.  However, I would expect to see a Stephen in the family.  Burials of his daughters show he lived in Little Bolton. James Mather, born 25 Oct 1774, son of William Gresgon and Elizabeth Mather seems more likely, as baptised at Bank Street Unitarian.

Marriage to Ellen shows "James Mathers" is a joiner, but James Mather (65) a Weaver in 1841 married to Charlotte (61) at Little Bolton Hall.
~1800 James Mather ~1755 James Mather James & Betty may be from Qularlton.

James and Betty lived at Turton.  They were at "Rock" when James was born, and later at "Goose Cote Hill" for Isaac and Margaret.  Goose Cote Hill was occupied by the Poor-law Guardians of Bolton Union before being sold in 1863.

This is NOT the James who married Esther Mason and later Hannah Howarth, (possible brother and witness to Peters marriage) as that James was literate.
1794 - 1874 John Mather 79 79 John was quite an important person, being an overlooker at the Looms.

In 1841 John (40, Overlooker, looms) & Jane (30) were with family James (14), William (12), Mary (10), John (7), Thomas (2) at Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

In 1851, John and Jane (52 & 39)  are still at 12 Barlow Street, Little Bolton with 7 children.

In 1861, John and Jane are at 24 Barlow Street with daughters Sarah (20) and Esther (11), and grandchildren Jane (11) and John (7)

In 1871 John was at 22 Base St, Little Bolton (75) with Wife Jane (63) and Grandson John (17).

We can be sure he was from Edgworth, born about 1794-1798, as census records vary.  Possibly John born 1794 (if 1861 census is correct), so likely the son of Thomas a Calco Printer and Alice from Quarlton (0.5km south of Edgworth). The son of a printer becoming an overlooker at the looms is quite likely, but by no means certain.
1848 - 1922 John Mather 74 74 John is the son of Thomas and Hannah Kirkham of Bradshaw, Turton

In 1851, John (3) was with parents Thomas and Hannah at Edgworth

In 1861, John (13, Factory Worker) was with his parents and family at Old School, Turton.

In 1871, John is 21 with his mother Hannah (Head, 66, Mar). Had his father Thomas gone?

In 1881, John (an under carder, born Turton) and Elizabeth (29 & 28) were living at 13 Cox Green Road, Walmsley, Turton with son Arthur (2).

In 1891 there is no record!

In 1901, John and Elizabeth (52 & 50) were living at 52 Hough Lane, Eagley with Arthur (22), Ernest (18), John (17), Annie (15) and James (11). John was a Cotton Card Loom Hand.

In 1907 the family were living at 62 Rawsthorn Street (near All Souls). Ernest and Hannah both recorded this as their address when they both married.

In 1911, John & Elizabeth (62 & 59) had son James (21) and daughter Annie Woodward (25), living at Myrrrh Street, Little Bolton.

John died in 1922, aged 74
1850 - 1932 Elizabeth Naylor 82 82 Elizabeth's father was John Naylor. a spinner. Census records show she was born in Blackburn. The 1871 census shows her parents were John from Preston and Mary from Wigan. If this is right, then she was born 2 May 1850 and baptised 15 May 1850 at Blackburn.

In 1874, Elizabeth married John Mather. Her witness was James Naylor (her closest brother, b 1854).

In 1881, John and Elizth (29 & 28) were living at 13 Cox Green Road with their son Arthur (2).

In 1901, John and Elizabeth (52 & 50) and their family were at 25 Hough Lane, Eagley (Turton).

In 1911, John and Elizabeth (62 & 59), son James (21)  and her married daughter Annie were living at 8 Myrrh Street, Little Bolton.

Elizabeth probably died in Little Bolton in 1919 (aged 65), or 1932 (aged 81).
1757 - 1794 James Mather 37 37 James is probably the son of John and Mary Mather fom Whitefields.  The age matches, its the nearest parish (other than Bolton), and the fitst two children (Mary and John) are named after his parents. 1724 - 1797 James Mather 73 73 James's parents were probably James and Alice (Alice wife of James of Rumworth died in 1764). 1802 - 1863 James Mather 61 61 James became a Muslin Manufacturer in Little Bolton, and was that in 1840 when he married Martha Bentley.  His father was John Mather, a shopkeeper. His brother(?), Charles Mather was witness at their marriage.

A licence was prepared in 1839 showing James a manufacturer, and a marriage notice for "James Mather" and "Martha Bentley" was placed in the newspaper 5 Sep 1840

In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40 or 49) in Deansgate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.F.), John Yeoman (20, a Hatter and William Coonnaly (30, Irish).  He had presumably taken over the Inn from Matty's father William Horrocks in 1840 when he married Matty.  Two years later, both Matty and her father died.

Aged 49 in 1851, a Cotton Manufacturer from Little Bolton.
Now married to Hannah (born 1814 from Edgworth). From Little Bolton and a Cotton Manufacturer, employingh 65 men.

Aged 59 in 1861, a Counterplane Manufacturer with wife Hannah 46
1808 - 1878 James Mather 70 70 Assumed to be Son or Rachel, based in 1851 census both are at "New House".  James is a farmer, and his mother Rachel a Logding House Keeper.  As the oldest son, he got the farm.

In 1831, James (or his father) was witness at John's marriage to Jane Entwistle

Brother John & Jane Mather had Charles (b.1832), John (b.1834) and Ralph (b.1835) at Edgworth independant while at New House, Entwistle in 1841.

Lived at Old Barn, Entwistle (Silk weaver, 1841 census)

In 1878, James died at Newhouse Farm (see probate)
1773 - 1854 James Mather 81 81 James was married to Mary from Scotland in 1841 and 1851.

James may be the son of Thomas from D.L.  James was left nothing in his father Thomas' will of 1823.  Perhaps because he had moved away from the family.  However, birth is 2 years out, but closest match.

James and Mary, Crofter (when married) or Ag Labourer (1841 census) at Mount Pleasant, Edgworth in 1841.
~1740 Joshua Mather Joshua "Madder", was married at Lower Darwen ~1740 Margaret Fielden 1764 Mary Mather 1776 Margaret Mather 1773 Joshua Mather 1779 Betty Mather 1781 - 1851 John Mather 69 69 John Married Margaret Smith 1788 - 1790 Richard Rigby Mather 1 1 1768 Sarah Mather 1770 Hannah Mather ~1565 - >1628 Hugh Mather 63 63 ~1565 <unknown> ~1584 - <1628 Richard Mather 44 44 Richard was first married to Katherine (recorded in a 1618 article of agreement between him and James Starkye of Pennington).  By 1628 (when Hugh Mather had died), Richard had deceased and his widow was Alice Mather. ~1585 Alice Mather 1602 Hugh Mather 1599 James Mather 1604 Thomas Mather 1598 John Mather 1609 - ~1611 Adam Mather 2 2 1601 Anne Mather 1841 Robert Roberts Robert son of Robert, both engineers. 1827 - 1872 James Fogg 45 45 In 1841, James was a gringer, living in Water Street, Bolton West with Harriet Hill (30), John Hill (5), Christania Hill (1) and brother William Fogg (8).

Maria and James (both born Bolton), had moved to Dukinfield by 1861
1830 - 1887 Maria Mather 57 57 Who was Maria, assumed daughter of Thomas who she was with in 1841?  She married at Christ Church, Bolton, just a year or two after Samuel and William, sons of John Mather (1823-1892) but no other indication the family is related.

"Mariah" daughter of James & Rachel Mather of Entwistle (by Edgworth), born 17 Sep 1829, baptised 27 Sep 1829 is not her.  This Maria, also aged 11, was at Sunnyside farm, Edgworth with her parents in 1841.
1850 John Thomas Fogg John in 1851, but John Thomas in 1861 1853 Ellen Fogg 1855 Christiana Fogg 1857 Harriet Ann Fogg 1861 Susannah Fogg 1864 Elizabeth Fogg 1866 William Fogg 1870 James Fogg 1799 - 1835 Margaret Isherwood 36 36 There are several reasons why Margaret may be the mother of Maria, but it is still largely speculative.  Mary daughter of Thomas and Marg't is the closest to 1830 for any Bolton baptism.  Also if Thomas's wife died before 1841, Margaret wife of Thomas died in 1835, aged 36.  This is the closest burial for a wife of Thomas Mather at St Peters, and the abode is Great Bolton (not Sharples).  Finally Thomas & Margaret are not already in the larger Mather tree, so could fit. 1872 Samuel Fogg 1806 - 1835 John Fogg 29 29 1808 - 1870 Harriet Rosthorn 62 62 Harriet was a widow at 32 Greenhalgh Street, L.B. in 1861 1812 - <1861 John Hill 49 49 1833 William Fogg In 1851, like his step-father John Hill, William Fogg was also a Machine Grinder. 1835 John Hill 1841 Christiana Hill 1843 Thomas Sykes Hill 1846 Benjamin Hill 1852 George Hill 1794 - 1848 Thomas Mather 54 54 Thomas Mather (50) was at Balshaw Street, Bolton West in 1841 with daughter Maria (11).  His wife Margaret (of G.B.) had died in 1835 aged only 36.  Margaret was a widow when she married Thomas, so both may have earlier marriages.

It is another Thomas Mather (born about 1803) who married Margaret Tinsley in 1825.
1790 - 1819 John Mather 29 29 There are no Bolton marriages for John and Mary 1805-1815. John was from either Walton-le-Dale or Leigh (based on marriage records). Leigh has now been eliminated (that is John the Mechanic).

In 1811, John married Mary at Walton-le-Dale, St Leonard.

John died at Kittlingburn, Walton-le-Dale aged 29.  Burial records also show Thomas (1750-1821) and Jane Mather (1750-1823) died at Kittlingburn, Walton but are they the same parents?
1789 Mary Ashworth 1813 Sarah Ann Mather In 1843, Sarah Ann Mather married Thomas Adams, a butcher,  at St John, Manchester.

In 1851 Thomas and Sarah Adams (32 & 34) were at Manechester St George. Thomas was still a butcher..

1810 Elizabeth Kay 1835 Margaret Mather 1843 Thomas Mather Joshua (and John) is a reoccuring name in this family.  As Thomas and Catherine had a son Joshua, it is likely that this famioly is correct.

In 1871, Thomas and Catherine (28 & 27) were at Salt Pie Row, Bolton with John (5), Catherine (3) and Margaret (2mo)

In 1881, Thomas and Catherine (both 37) were at 10 Rigby Street, Bolton with 7 children
1846 John Mather There is a John Mather born about 1847 who emigrated to Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts and this could be him as there is some evidence his father may emigrated to Massachusetts. However, this John's parents were John and Mary (on his marriage record). 1833 - 1841 Catherine Mather 8 8 Catherine was 8 in 1841

Catherine wasnt with the family in 1851, died August 1841.

In 1944, when Edward died, he left an estate worth £21,728 to his sister Emily (in Kent).  It appears she never got the money (or was a big spender), as Emily died a spinster in Banbury Hospital in 1964, leaving only £465.
1883 - 1920 Ernest Mather 36 36 In 1883 there are 4 Ernest Mather births (Lancashire BMD) and the one birth in Turton fits Little Bolton where Ernest married and had his family.

In 1907, after they marredi and when Ernest was baptised, the family had moved down the road to 4 Acton Street.

Edward died young (36) in 1920 so Mary may have re-married. There is a marriage of Mary A Mather to David Lythgoe at St Thomas, Halliwell in 1923 that fits well.

~1785 John Mather There are not many John Mather & Alice marriages around.  The only others are John Mather and Alice Goldbourn in Wigan in 1803 and John Mather and Ann Entwistle in 1824 at Blackburn.  Therefore all Prestwich and Bolton baptisms are likely to be for this John and Alice.
