John is my great great grandfather.  John was a baptist, and probably attended Moor Street Chapel, although he later married Elizabeth Kay at Dukes Alley Chapel.

After he married Ellen, he stayed at their family home at Crook Street (1838 when Benjamin born and 1843 when wife Ellen died), although his family house was at Blackburn Street.

In 1841, John (25) was living with Ellen (20) and son Joseph (1) at Blackburn Street, Little Bolton (not with parents), working as a Cotton Spinner.

In 1843, John was living at Coopers Square, Little Bolton (on Wedding certificate).  The newspapers reported John Mather of Little Bolton marrying Miss Elizabeth Kay of Halliwell.

Between 1844 and 1854, John and Elizbeth had 6 more children, all registered at Little Bolton. Elizabeth Mather registered in 1841 is another family (Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay) also in Little Bolton.

In 1851, John was living at 58 Chorley St., Bolton (a labourer at the Iron Works, age 35) with new Wife Elizabeth (32) and son Joseph (11), Hannah (6), Samuel (4), Margaret (2) and Sarah A (8mo)

Samuel Mather confirmed as father on marriage certificate.  Making a fair assumption that Isaac Mather (the only other Mather family living in Little Bolton in 1851) is a brother.  Isaacs father is also known to be Samuel.

John the Shopkeeper is another.  James Mather of Water St, son of John, a Shopkeeper married Martha Bently 26 Aug 1840. This cannot be the same person, but could be two shopkeepers!.

In 1856, John was a witness to younger brother George's marriage to Mary Marsh. Both could sign their names.

In 1861, John and Elizabeth (45 and 43) are at 114 Chorley Street with their children Joseph (21), Hannah (16), Samuel (14), Margaret (12), Sarah (10), John (8) and Ruth (6).

In 1864, John of 114 Chorley Street died.

Mather family?

From the 1841 census (Marlow Row, L.B.) it appears that William (45) and Jane (45) are husband and wife.  However, there is no marriage for such.  Instead, there are probably borther and sister, of parents Richard and Mary Mather (nee Rigby).

William died in 1842, aged 50 so was born about 1792. There are no matching Bolton baptisms, but it is likely William is the son of Richard and Mary, who had a William die in 1792, so had thier next son baptised William, but baptism records are missing for this family after 1793.

William married Catherine, but she died in 1834 so William's children were brought up by him and his sister Jane.  It's just a theory, but a good one!

1702 - 1776 Samuel Mather 74 74 In 1739, Samuel Mather of Deane married Mary Haeys of Leigh (at Leigh) by Banns.

Samuel Mather was a widower when he married Mary Yates.  Before that, he may have been married to Mary's sister, Ann Yates of Eccles (married 1732).  Another possibility is Mary Hayes of Leigh (married 1739)
1721 - 1781 Mary Yates 59 59 1761 - 1828 Samuel Mather 67 67 Samuel liked his Marys.  He married Mary Hodgkindon in 1785, Mary Haslam in 1787 (both at Deane), and then Mary Thorp in 1794. 1763 - 1794 Mary Haslam 30 30 Mother Catherine or Alice?

According to Mary's daughter (also Mary) baptism, Mary was the daughter of "John and Catharine Haslam of Deane".  However, the baptism names Mary's mother Alice.

In 1828 Luke, a widower and reed maker married Grace Jones (a widow).

In 1849 Luke, now 64 a widower and still a Reed Maker at Portland Street, Manchester married a 49 yeer old Elizabeth Chapman.

Luke Mather (Reed Maker) died at Browning Street in Hulme, Manchester Dec 8 1864 of old age (Natural Decay).
~1755 - 1847 Grace Jones 92 92 Grace had Margaret (30), Emma (3) ans Ann Croasdale (20) with her in 1841.  There are probably her children from an earlier marriage, as she was a widow when she married Luke.. 1800 Elizabeth Chapman 1829 Elizabeth Leigh 1831 - 1900 Luke Mather 69 69 Luke was the son of Richard Mather.  He was also married at Manchester Cathederal, just two years after Luke, son of Thomas, but are they related? ~1785 Sarah 1816 - 1896 Thomas Mather 80 80 Thomas was baptised in 1840.  Perhaps the family changed from being quakers.  His mother is recorded as Sarah, even though his father Luke had remarried in 1829.  It must have been an adult baptism.

1789 - 1814 Thomas Mather 25 25 Did Thomas marry?  All 5 Thomas Mather marriages at Bolton between 1806 and 1830 are accounted for.  The "obvious" 1810 marriage to Ann Holt is a Blackrod family, and the others are after 1822.

There is a perfect match for the death of Thomas Mather of Great Bolton, aged 25 in May 1814.  Therefore, it appears he never married.

1786 - 1859 James Mather 72 72 From 1804 till 1818, James was a Private in Coldstream Regt of Foot Guards.

1800 - 1859 William Mather 59 59 WARNING - May have the wrong marriage as Catherine Pikiington in 1816 is also a good fit.  This was a double wedding of William and Richard, possible brothers.

William, a weaver of Great Bolton had his children baptised at St. Mary Deane

In 1841, William and Betty (both 35, hand loom weavers) were were at Laths House, Bolton with Thomas (17), John (15), Susannah (11) and James (9).

Her marriage shows Thjomas Taylor of Deane and Jane of this parish (i.e. Great Bolton).

On 15 April 1811, Jane and brother John had a double wedding.  Jane married Thomas Taylor.  Like Jane's family., Thomas was a Hand Loom Weaver, but from Standish.

1837 Martha Cotton 1812 - 1845 Sarah Mather 33 33 This is not the Sarah Mather nee Bayley who lost a husband William in 1833.  Probably daughter of William and Martha of G.B., born Nov 1812

Sarah Mather married James Cottom, a mechanic on 11 Jan 1837, just 16 days before their daughter Martha was baptised - That was close !

Sarah was living in the Union Buildings, E Bolton with James's parents Thomas and Martha (assumed) and family in 1841, aged 25 and with daughter Martha (4).  James was missing and died in August.

If daughter Sarah was with her uncle William and Betty in 1851, then Sarah must be the daughter of John Mather who married a Betty, possibly this John and Betty Edge.  John & Betty Sutcliff didnt have a son Wiliam.

In 1871, James (56, Wid), was a Fustian Dyer with son Richard (26), John (22) and Mary (16), at 3 Crewe Place, Regent Road, Salford.  It is not clear who "son" John is and perhaps it is Jane, or a son-in-law.
1838 William Crompton 1840 Alice Crompton The birth for alice was registered as MATHER, not CROMPTON.  This appeares to have been an error. 1843 Ellen Crompton 1845 Richard Crompton 1848 Jane Crompton 1851 Elizabeth Crompton In 1871, Eliza married John Chadwick at St. Paul's,  Bury 1854 Mary Crompton 1836 James Crompton 1842 James Mather In 1860, James, sizer, son of Joseph Mather, a labourer married Nancy Ponfret Cooper, dau of Page Ponfret Cooper at St Peter, Bolton.

In 1861, Joseph and Mary (both 50) are at 9 Hanover Street, Wigan. Joseph is a Coal Miner born at Aspull.  Mary is a Bonnin Minder from Ireland.  Many of the neighbours are also Irish.  Their son James and Nancy (20 & 19) are with them.  Although so much fits, other records suggest this in noa a mining family.

In 1881, Joseph Mather (77, Wid) was a lodger, recorded as a British Subject, born at Sea.  Is this him?
1808 Mary Mary is from Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

1841/42 Birth records for their son James suggest MMN is either GRADWEL, GUNN or TURNER.  GUNN is more likely as there are other marriages for the others.

24 Sep 1833, Mary Gullan married Joseph Mather at Manchester.  Seem unlikely thjis is them, so perhaps they married in Ireland.
1857 Thomas Kay 1815 - 1899 George Yates 84 84 In 1861, George and Mary (45 & 44) were at Milton Street, West Bolton 1839 Sarah Yates 1844 Elizabeth Yates 1850 John Yates 1824 John Mather John, illiigitimate child of Alice Mather (spinster) 1775 - 1853 David Milner 78 78 14 June 1836 David married Frances Mather by license at Bolton.  Both had been previously married.

Witness James Smith.  He also married Jemima Statham 24 Oct 1819 and had daughter Margaret in 1820. This may be him (similar signatures), but later in 1841 and 1851, when older, he is a labourer.

In 1851 the grandchildren were with Peter Smith and Betty had gone, presumed died.
<unknown> 1810 - <1851 Jane (Jenny) Collinge 41 41 In 1841, Jane Haslam was 25 living with Peter and Betty Smith at Farnworth.  She had her four children with her, the youngest being Betty, born 1839.  Betty Haslam's Farnworth birth record reveals the mother's (Jane) maiden name as COLLINGE.  Also, assuming she was recently widowed, the only male Haslam death in Farnworth was Nathan Haslam in 1839, aged 30.  Their 1829 Farnworth marriage confirms this family line.  Baptism records show the family lived in Kearsley.

Jane (also known as Jenny when Mary baptised) imay have remarried (civil marriage). There are no indexed (CoE) marriages with the father named as Collinge or Collins. However, in 1851, the ghildren were with their grandfather Peter Smith so its also likely she had died.
1809 - 1839 Nathan Haslam 30 30 Nathan was "the son of Lawrence Haslam (-1829) of Kersley and Betty (1772-1846) his wife"

All of Nathan's children's baptisms show Nathas was a Collier living at Kearsley (1829 to 1839).

Ellen wife of Peter Smith of Farnworth and Bolton, Shoe maker must have died as he married again in 1819

In 1841, Ellen and Peter Smith Shoe Maker (both 50) are at Prescot, St. Helens.  This must be another couple as Peter Smith Shoe maker married Jemima in 1819.
