NeighborJoseph Mather (farmer) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) with their father Isaac (aged 80) at Know Mill, Edgworth in 1841. With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings. NeighborIsaac (weaver) was alive in 1841 at Know Mills, Edgworth, with his daughter Alice Settle (b.1801). He died the following year. Neighbours at Higher Know Mills were farmer Joseph & Elizabeth Mather (40 & 35) and family. Possibly married - tbc Possible children of Thomas Mather & Betty Bromiley (Married Bolton, 2 Feb 1761) 1740 - 1823 Thomas Mather 83 83 1743 - 1813 Betty Thornley 70 70 1812 Thomas Mather Thomas may have married Elizabeth (1811-1846) of Little Bolton. 1812 - 1838 Betty Garside 26 26 1836 - 1837 Fanny Mather 1 1 Fanny was probably names after Isaac's youngest sister, Fanny born 5 years earlier (also baptised at Edgworth Independant).

Fammy may have died Sep 1842 (registered Bury), or more likely she used the name Ann instead of Fanny.  There are Marriages for Fanny Mather to Richard Hodson (Manchester, 1863) and Peter Winstanley (Wigan & Leigh, 1870)
1819 - ~1862 Elizabeth (Betty) Marsden 43 43 Betty was the daughter of John Marsden, a farmer from High House, Entwistle.  Betty, aged 22, was with Isaac 26 living by her father in Entwistle in 1841.  They had their first chikd Betty, aged 1.

In 1841, Isaac and Betty (26 & 22) were at Edge Fold, Edgworth and had Betty (aged 1).

Betty in 1851,1661 census and Elizabeth in 1871 (a different person).
1850 - 1900 Luke Mather 49 49 Luke married Ellen Almond and had four children: James (1875), Isaac (1881), Esther Jane (1884) and Betsy Ellen (1890).

Like lived on the Bolton Road, Darwen.  He was a shopkeeper.
Luke died in 1922. His last address was 497 Bolton-road, Darwen
1853 William Mather 1855 Ruth Mather Isaac, Ruth's father, was lodging with James and Ruth Knowles in 1891 1855 James Mather 1858 John Mather On 24 Apr 1875, John Mather, aged 18, son of Isaac, married Mary Jane Miller.  They lived in Samlesbury and had 8 children 1857 Alice Mather 1858 - 1931 Andrew Mather 72 72 Andrew married Elizabeth Mitton, dau of Thomas Mitton in 1884.  However to confuse the family historians, in 1899 he married  Susannah Ollerenshaw

Andrew and Elizabeth had three children
1860 - 1901 Sarah Jane Mather 41 41 Sarah Jane married James Hargreves 22 Sep 1883 in Bolton 1861 Esther Mather 1849 Simon Mather Missing on 1871 census for family with Isaac and Betty, so assumed married (age 22) and left home by then.

Frederick (b.1858), son of another Simon married Ellen Corfield in Bolton 1879.
1846 Sophia Mather Missing on 1871 census for family with Isaac and Betty, so assumed married (age 25) and left home by then. 1842 James Mather Missing on 1871 census for family with Isaac and Betty, so assumed married (age 29) and left home by then. 1840 Elizabeth (Betty) Mather Called Betty in 1841

Missing on 1861 and 1871 census for family with Isaac and Betty, so assumed married (age 22) by 1861 and left home by then.
1815 - <1898 Sarah Smith 83 83 Sarah's father was Henry Smith from Edgworth, a Mason.

Sarah and Isaac were recorded at Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA in 1850 with their first four children, all born in the US, so they must have emigrated before 1842, so soon after they married (they cant be found on the UK 1841 census).

Sarah possibly died 16 Aug 1856 in Rhode Island, and Isaac remarried another Sarah in the US.  This would also explain why daughter Sarah Alice went to live with her aunt Susannah.  Alternatively the family may have broken up and Sarah returned to the UK as a Sarah Mather was living with her brother-in-law James Smith (b.1800) in 1851 at 31 Rothwell St. or could this be another?  Something happened, as her daughter Sarah Alice seems to have been adopted by her sister Susanna.  Isaac’s newspaper obituary does say that Isaac married again in the US.

Isaac is back with (another younger?) Sarah in 1880, but no children present. Sarah (63) and Isaac (69) are at Rhode Island, USA.

When his son James died, the informant recorded his mother's name as Margaret Smith.  This is assumed to be an error as there is no such marriage (UK or US).
~1796 - 1852 Jane Lee 56 56 Did Jane Mather (widowed of Lostock, dau of Thomas Alker) marry Isaac Dodd on 26 Nov 1849? 1822 - 1897 Joseph Mather 75 75 Still with parents in 1841 (Calico Printer Apprentice) and 1851.

Joseph (a quarryman) married Sarah Lee in 1855. His father Isaac was a farmer (28 acres in 1851).

In 1861, Joseph was married to Sarah, was working as a Coal Miner and had his father lodging with him.
1826 - 1874 Peter Mather 48 48 In 1841, Peter was 14 and Jacob 13 (so not twins) at the White Horse, Edgworth with their father Isaac and step-mother Sarah.

Peter was still with his father Isaac and mother Jane in 1851, a Quarreyman at Edgworth.

In 1849, Peter and Jacob (brothers) were listed on the criminal register of larceny from the person.

In 1851, Peter and Jacob, both 25, were single and with the family in Edgworth.

Peter may have married Mary.  Peter, born Edgworth and family are at Elton in 1871 with sons Reuben and Isaac.
1826 Jacob Mather In 1841, Peter was 14 and Jacob 13 (so not twins) at the White Horse, Edgworth with their father Isaac and step-mother Sarah.

In 1849, Peter and Jacob (brothers) were listed on the criminal register of larceny from the person.

In 1851, Jacob and Peter were 25, quarryman at Edgworth, still with their parents.

After 1851, Jacob seems to have vapourised.  He may have died in Livepool in 1864 (no age indexed)
1832 Sarah (Reuben) Mather It appeard Sarah's baptism was recorded as "Reuben" in error.  Reuben is an unusual name, yet two Reuben baptisms are recorded on the same day at the same chapel.  Then, there is no evidance of any Reuben on the census, marriage or death, although clearly there is a Sarah without  a baptism. However, However, Reuben later became a name used by the family.  Where they twins?

In 1841, Sarah was aged 8 at the old White Horse, Edgworth with Isaac, Jane and family.

In 1851, Sarah was 15 (rounded), still with parents and family at Edgworth
1829 Jane Mather Aged 12 in 1841, living with parents Isaac and Jane.

In 1851, Jane (22) and son Reuben (1) was living with her sister Alice and family.
1824 - 1870 Alice Mather 46 46 In 1841, Alice was 17 at the White Horse, Edgworth with her father Isaac and step-mother Sarah.

Left home by 1851, so presumed married William Crowshaw 8 Apr 1844
1796 - ~1834 Sarah Jackson 38 38 Sarah must have died after Dec 1832 when Reuben was born, but before 1837 when Isaac married Jame Lee.  Isaac and family were at Edgworth with Jane in 1841. 1817 - 1894 Ann Mather 77 77 Only have a Bolton Christening record for Ann (abode Edgworth), and connot find on the census, so had proabbly married by 1841 (not George Dunn 11-Apr-1833 as only 16 then).

29 July 1838, Ann Mather, daughter of Isaac Mather of Edgwoth, Weaver married John Nelson, a Shoe Maker.
1834 Sarah Lee From Edgworth on Marriage Record on 1855, father Peter Lee, a Crofter. 1852 James Knowles Isaac, Ruth's father, was lodging with James and Ruth Knowles in 1891

James's father was Jacob, and both were quarrymen.
1794 - 1874 John Mather 79 79 John was quite an important person, being an overlooker at the Looms.

In 1841 John (40, Overlooker, looms) & Jane (30) were with family James (14), William (12), Mary (10), John (7), Thomas (2) at Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

In 1851, John and Jane (52 & 39)  are still at 12 Barlow Street, Little Bolton with 7 children.

In 1861, John and Jane are at 24 Barlow Street with daughters Sarah (20) and Esther (11), and grandchildren Jane (11) and John (7)

In 1871 John was at 22 Base St, Little Bolton (75) with Wife Jane (63) and Grandson John (17).

We can be sure he was from Edgworth, born about 1794-1798, as census records vary.  Possibly John born 1794 (if 1861 census is correct), so likely the son of Thomas a Calco Printer and Alice from Quarlton (0.5km south of Edgworth). The son of a printer becoming an overlooker at the looms is quite likely, but by no means certain.
1791 - 1863 Mary (Mally) Grime 72 72 Lived at Brown St, Edgeworth.

Mary is sometimes knows as "Mally", a Scottish or Northern England nickname.
1810 Betty Mather Dont know what happened to Betty.  No death records, and no marriages with Solomon named.  May have married one of the following:
4 June 1830: John Bayley (both single)
Cant find in 1841.

5 Mar 1832: Thomas Rigby (both single)
Betty (b.1810) and Thomas Rigby at Adlington in 1851, so probably another family.

20 Sep 1835: Not Peter Smith as they were widow and widower when married.
1812 - 1898 Isaac Mather 86 86 Sarah was not with Isaac in 1851, but was recorded as married (not Widow), so Isaac was probably still alive then (possibly in the USA).

In 1839, Isaac, son of Solomon, a mechanic from Edgworth
was a widower when he married Sarah Smith.  He was NOT in Montgomery, PA - That is another.

About 1840, Isaac and Sarah (nee Smith) moved to the USA.

In 1851, Isaac and Sarah (both 37) are at Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA with William H (8), Elisabeth (6), James A (4), and Susannah (2).

In 1870, Isaac and Sarah (60 & 54) are at Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island.

In 1880, Isaac and Sarah (69 & 63) were at Warrick, Kent, Rhode Island.  This Sarah was his third wife, married in Bolton in 1839.

Isaac from Edgworth has been reported by some as born 27 Oct 1799 (this is an error), died 1898 (aged 99) who married three times, the last marriage being Sarah Langford (also wrong), before they emigrated to the USA.  This Isaac was already in the US by 1850, and was actually born 1812, which explains why he was so fit at 99. Sarah Langford actually married Morgan Pender in Q3/1838, while another Isaac Mathers married Esther Kershaw, both at Manchester.
1814 - 1895 Alice Mather 81 81 Working as cook for father Solomon (a publican) in 1851.  She was recorded as from Little Bolton when she married Joseph Beddows the following year.

in Dec 1852, Alice Hargreves (nee Mather) married Joseph Beddows.  Alice's father is recorded as "Solomon Mather, Publican".

In 1871, Joseph and Alice were at the Boars Head, Bolton, so it seems Alice kept her fathers business going as an Inn Keeper.
~1812 - <1841 Jabez Hargreaves 29 29 Not the Jazez Hargreves from Newchurch in Pendle, who married Mary and had children Thomas, Susannah, Eliz and Michael (1837 - 1845) 1829 Amos Mather There is another Amos Mather, 4 years younger, born 1838, the son of James and Martha.

Another Amos b.1838, son of Thomas, married Hannah Hullock in Q2/1863 at Walmsley Christ church.  The other Amos married Ann Briggs at Bolton St Peter the same year.

Amos Meader (born 9 Aug 1832) and buried 1899 in Clinton, NY is another person.
1837 Margaret Hargreaves Margaret (from Edgworth) appears to have married Thomas Hopkins and had two children. Census records are consistent with her from Edgworth (before and after marriage).

There is also a marriage in 1870 for a single Margaret Hargreaves, father Jabez, who married John Russell at St Peter's Manchester.  Either this is a bigamous marriage or there are two Margraets with father called Jabez!  There are no census records for this Margaret from Edgworth, so this must be another!
John Russell father's name: Thomas Russell   1809 - 1884 Joseph Knight 75 75 In 1871, Joseph and Alice were at the Boars Head, Bolton, so it seems Alice kept her fathers business going as an Inn Keeper. 1819 - 1856 Joseph Beddows 36 36 Joseph married Alice Hargreved (nee Mather) in 1852 when he was a Millwright.

Alice's father Solomon Mather was a publican in 1851, and it is just possible that so was Joseph Beddows.  Probate for Joseph Beddows who died in 1858 (not 1856 as this one did) shows he died at the Black Greyhound", Horwich.  This Joseph was buried at Horwich Holy Trinity in Jun 1856!.

Possibly born Hindley, as a Joseph Beddows, widower, age 30, was lodging at 13 Gas Street in 1851 with Grime and Pendlebury families.
1833 Thomas Hopkins 1866 Thomas E Hopkins 1864 - 1876 Herbert Hopkins 12 12 ~1764 Alice Fielding Possibly Alice is the daughter of John and Susan Fielding from Milnrow (E of Rochdale), but that isnt Bolton Parish, which is where she was from when married.  Alice from Adlington, born 2 Sep 1759 is more likely as closer age match to Isaac, and also correct parish. ~1840 James Duckworth 1788 - >1865 Rachel Hamer 77 77 Rachel (b. 1786) is may the daughter of John Hamer and Mary Berry or Mary Tongue (baptised at Bury).  However, the Non-conformist Turton Baptism is more likely, daughter of John and Mally

In 1851, Rachel was a lodging house keeper, born Turton, aged 63.

In 1861, Rachel was a washerwoman living with Alice Settle, aged 73.

Did the old girl remarry Haworth WATSON at Blackburn RO in 1863?  A Rached Watson of Little Boilton died in 1866, aged 81.
1818 Nancy Mather In 1841, Nancy (24) was with her parents at Sunnyside (farm), Edgworth.  She (or Sarah) may be the mother of the illegitimate child John (1 month) 1819 Jenny (Jane) Mather Able born 1841, was probably an illegitimate child.  However after Jane married Andrew Bently, he took Able on as his own.  He was "Able Bently" on the 1851 census. 1821 - ~1822 Andrew Mather 1 1 1822 Sarah Mather Sarah was baptised twice, first aged 3 and later as an adult (aged 47) at St Peter (formerly Holy Trinity), Over Darwen

In 1841, Sarah (18) was with her parents at Sunnyside (farm), Edgworth.  She (or Nancy) may be the mother of the illegitimate child John (1 month)
1770 Alice Entwistle Alice's parents were Thomas and Alice 1787 - 1826 Mary Mather 39 39 There are 7 possible Bolton marriages of Mary Mather from 1804 to 1824. Assuming she stayed in the area and buried at Turton, only one of these Marys is a match, the marriage to James Lee in 1823.

1788 - 1792 John Mather 4 4 1790 - 1792 Ann Mather 2 2 1792 - 1819 Charles Mather 27 27 Charles Mather does not appear to have married.. 1796 - 1873 Edward Mather 77 77 The only marriage I can find is in Northumberland.  Seems unlikely, but its all I have!

Edward and Ann had their children baptised at Edgworth Independant.  Edward was a washer (probably in the print industry like his father).
1767 - >1851 Mary Barber 84 84 James (Ag Labourer) and Mary were at Mount Pleasant, Edgworth in 1841.  There were both alive (80 & 83) at Brandwood, Edgworth in 1851. 1797 - 1798 John Mather 1 1 1798 - 1799 Thomas Mather 1 1 1800 - 1811 James Mather 11 11 1805 - 1861 Thomas Mather 56 56 Thomas cut it fine getting married 6 April 1828.  Thier first baby Alice was born 19 May, the following month.

From 1828, Thomas lived at Turton Bottoms.  Records show Alice and Ann were born there).

In 1841, Thomas (30), a block printer like his father and Hannah (also 30) were at Bottoms, Edgworth.  They had their children baptised at Edgworth Independent.  They had 4 surviving children Alice, Ann, Amos and Jane (13, 9, 6, 3).

In 1851 Thomas & Hannah (both 42) where at the Old Globe Buildings, Turton.  Thomas, born Qualerton was a Gas Maker. They had 8 children: Alice, Ann, Amos, Jane and Thomas, Charles, John, Hannah (22, 18, 16, 12, 10, 6, 3, 9mo).

Thomas died Q1/1861, before the census, aged 52
1791 - 1849 Abraham Settle 58 58 Settle indexed as "Senle" on 1841 census.  Joseph Mather (farmer) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, Edgworth with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) and their father Isaac (aged 80) at Know Mill.  With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings. 1801 - 1863 Alice Mather 62 62 1841, Abraham (45, Bleacher) and Alice Settle (40) were at Know Mills, Edgworth with William (15), John (12) and Alice (5), and Alice's father Isaac Mather (80).

1861, Alice Settle (60) was at Edgworth with Rachel Mather (73), both Washerwomen.  Ann also had her daughter Elizabeth (18) with her.
1825 William Settle 1829 James (John) Settle 1836 Alice Settle 1843 - 1874 Elizabeth Settle 30 30 In 1861, Elizabeth (18) was still with her mother.  She did not marry (not between 1861-1871)

In 1871, Elizabeth Settle (28) was an inmate in the Salford Union Workhouse.

Elizabeth died in 1874, aged only 31 (recorded as 29)

Elizabeth didnt marry Abraham Higginson in 1880. That Elizabeth was the daughter or Thomas Whitehead.
1822 - 1892 Stephen Settle 69 69 In 1849, Stephen a Grocer at Strangeways, Manchester, son of Abraham a farmer, married Jane Howe at Manchester

In 1851, Stephen, a Grocer and Tea Dealer, born Entwistle (28) and Jane (27) had their son William (1), two apprentices and a house servant living at Gt Ducie Street, Cheetham, Lancashire
1829 - 1895 Maria Mather 65 65 Maria, 11 was with her parents at Sunnyside (farm), Edgworth in 1841.  However, unlike Able listed next to her, her parents are confirmed as James and Rachel. 1806 - 1871 Hannah (Ann) Kirkham 65 65 In 1851, Hannah (wife) and same age as Thomas.  Not Hannah Whitehead, as they were from Manchester town.  Probably Ann or Anna, as many of the baptism records show her as Ann

In 1861 Hannah (52, Head) at Old School, Turton with 5 children and 4 grandchildren.

In 1871, Hannah Mather (66, Head) is with Jane (30, Dau), John (22, Son), and grandchildren Alice (16) and Thomas (8). She is Married but was a Widow in 1861

In 1891, Hannah and family are neighbours of George and Ann Mather.
1793 Ann Brown 1825 Alice Mather Alice Mather, daughter of Edward Mather married John Allen 5 July 1846 at Bolton. 1827 - 1827 Susannah Mather 1829 - >1911 Susannah Mather 82 82 Susannah Mather of Edgworth, spinner, had a son Joseph baptised 9 April 1854 at Turton.  She would have been about 25.  Thus Susanah lived with her parents into her fourties., unmarried, although seems to have had two children, JKoseph and Margaret (born 1857).

In 1911 Susannah Mather (83) "Mother" and "Single" is living with her son Joseph (57) and extended family at Edgwirth.
1832 Nancy Mather 1828 - 1915 Alice Mather 86 86 Mother "Ann"

Alice was still unmarried in 1861, living with mother Hannah and all surviving siblings, the oldest Alice aged 32.  However, there were 4 grandchildren present (oldest born 1852) that must be Alice or Ann's.

After her parents died, Alice Mather became head of the family, and as such was witness to youngest brother John's marriage of 1874

In 1871, Alice (43) was married to Ralph Entwistle (37) and had 4 of his children with them as well as Annie (1) and Walter (3mo) of her own.  Sarah (15) is probably also hers as was not with Ralph in 1861.

In 1881, Alice (52, born Turton Bottoms) and Ralph (47) were at 17 Barber Street, Sharples with her extended family.

In 1911, Alice (82) was with her children Annie and Walther (41 and 40) and Also "daughter" Sarah Mather (55) and her daughter Sarah Alice (31).

Alice died in 1915, aged 86
1832 Ann Mather Ann may have had a son Joseph (aged 3 in 1861).  In 1871 Joseph was 15 and Ann is now married to George Warbutton.  Ann and George married in 1863 at Bolton RO. 1830 - ~1840 John Mather 10 10 1835 - 1884 Amos Mather 48 48 This is first known occurance of an Amos Mather!  Another Amos, son of William and Peggy Mather, born 1842 (who also had Zephaniah) married Margaret Howarth at Mellor in 1870.

Amos died 1884 and is shows as deceased on all of his childrens marriages.

In 1891, Amos'd family are neighbours of George and Ann Mather.  Are they related?
1824 Charles Mather Charles married Betty Crompton (8 years younger) in 1861, and they were visiting with his parents in 1861.

Joseph (7) and Margaret Ann (2) were with them in 1861, but are probably Georges children i.e. nephew and neice.

Charles and Betty had Henry in 1863, John in 1866 and 4 more.

By 1881, the family were at 202 Waterloo St, Little Bolton, and Charles was a fireman.
1819 - 1821 James Mather 2 2 James, the first son was born will the family were at Quarlton.  This confirms the correct family, as Edwards fathere was a Printer in Quarlton. 1835 Amelia Mather 1760 - 1842 Isaac Mather 82 82 Isaac, a Weaver married Alice Fielding (spinster) on 4 Jan 1787.  The Solomon born 1798 is probably their son (as know to be born at Toppings).

After they married in 1787, Isaac and Alice lived at Toppings, Turton, which is recorded on the baptism records for Ann (1790) and Esther (1792).

Isaac (weaver) was alive in 1841 at Know Mills, Edgworth, with his daughter Alice Settle (b.1801).  He died the following year.  Neighbours at Higher Know Mills were farmer Joseph & Elizabeth Mather (40 & 35) and family (his son).

Isaac may have had other children after Alice (baptism records are known to be lost).  However, it is likely Alice was the youngest daughter as he was living with her before he died in 1842.
1810 - >1861 John Mather 51 51 In 1841, John (31), Jane (27) and family were weavers at New House, neighbouring James Mather (father), farmer at Sunnyside, Entwistle.

In 1851, John and Jane are at Edge Fold.

In 1861, John was 52, a general labourer, living with son Ralph and his wife Ann.  Rachel and John were also with them, so his wife Jane must have died.
1814 - <1851 Jane Entwistle 37 37 Jane Welsley or Entwistle (most likely, as older brother James Mather was a witness) 1835 - 1865 Ralph Mather 30 30 In 1861, Ralph (25) was married to Ann (20). His father John (52), sister Rachel (21), brother John (17) and nephew William (1) was with him, as well as his 4mo old son Ralph. 1838 - 1905 Rachel Mather 67 67 1840 Mary Ann Mather Mary Ann was 11 months old on the 1841 census, living at New House, Edgworth 1834 - 1836 John Mather 1 1 1843 John Mather 1845 Elizabeth J Mather 1846 - 1919 James A Mather 72 72 According to James A Mather's death cert, he was a printer.

One the PA death record, his mother is names as Margaret Smith, not Sarah Smith. The informant (Mrs Mary Mather) must have got it wrong (Sarah had died 22y earlier)

James A Mather had a son James Edward Mather and through him there is a DNA match to Paul Mather (but not me).
1854 - 1923 Sarah Alice Mather 69 69 Sarah was born at Rhode Island, and for many years was brought up by uncle and aunt Dennis and Susanna Leach.

Sarah married Edward Creighton of Scottish descent in 1882 (had been married 18 years in 1900).

The 1900 census is a bit odd.  Sarah was aged 46, yet had been in the US for 50 years.

There was come confusion as to where Sarah was born.  On the 1923 death record her mother is shows correctly as Sarah Smith, but the father Isaac Creighton, her merried name (not Isaac Mather).  The 1900 census shows birthplace as Ireland, but should be Rhode Island.

In 1894, Dennis Leache's estate was left to his daughter Elizabeth Manning and Sarah Alice Leighton, wife of Edward Creighton, so Sarah's middle name is Alice!
1849 Susannah Mather In 1860, Susannah was missing from the US census 1803 - >1871 Richard Mather 68 68 In 1826, Richard Mather and Mary married the same day as William Mather & Betty Fairview. A double marriage!

Dyer in 1826 (when John baptised), a blue dyer in 1841, a reel dyer (of cotton) in 1851, labourer at the Calico print works in 1861 and 1871.

Another Richard and Mary family had Hannah (in 1826) and Ellen (b. 1828). This Richard was a Fuller.

In 1841, Richard and Mary (both 35) were at Pilton Fold, Edgeworth with John, Alice, Sarah, Richard and Mary (15,15,13,5 & 2)
1803 - >1871 Mary Rostron 68 68 1826 John Mather 1831 - >1881 Alice Mather 50 50 1835 - 1902 Richard Mather 66 66 Richard Mather married Betty Booth 15 Dec 1861. 1838 Mary Mather 1841 Martha Mather Martha, unmarried, was with both parents in 1871 (so not married to Henry)

In 1871, Martha (unmarried, 26, born Quarlton) and living with parents at Pelton Fold had Richard (8) and Sarah Jane (5).

In 1881, Martha (36, born Quarlton) was Head at Turton Bottoms. She was unmarried, a Rag Picker at the Paper Mill, but had three children, Richard, Elizabeth Ellen and George (17, 3, & 9 mo). She should be 40, so could be wrong Martha
1831 Sarah Mather 13 in 1841, so may have married by 1851 as missing on census.  There are two Bolton marriages in 1844, but she would only be 13. 1838 - 1914 Jane Mather 76 76 In 1871, Jane (30, Dau, Unmarried) was a cotton operative living with her mother Hannah (66), brother John (21) and two children (possibly hers).

In 1891, Jane (50) is Head and "Wid" at 7 Warburton Fold, Turton

Dont confuse with Jane Mather nee Kay, wife of Amos, who was born Entwistle in 1836.
1841 - 1864 Thomas Mather 22 22 Thomas was 10 in 1851 and 19 in 1861 but missing after that. Thomas died in 1864, aged 22

Before he died in April, Thomas may have married.  There are 3 Bolton marriages for a Thomas Mather in 1864, but is unlikely even if he did marry, he had any children.
1844 - 1932 Charles Mather 88 88 Charles married Ann about 1869 (married 41 years in 1911) and all births show Ann's maiden name as Dewhurst.

Thomas and Charles had left home by 1871.  Charles (27) was married to Ann (23), and had a baby daughter Mary A (1) in Egerton.

In 1901, Charles and Ann (both 55) were at Farnworth with Mary A (30), Elizabeth (28), Henry (25), Edmund (19), Robert (16) and Samuel Finner, a boarer.

In 1911, Charles (65, Wid) at 34 Rishton, Great Lever with Mary Ann (40), Margaret Elizabeth (38) and William Henry (35, married). Charles had 5 children (all alive)

Charles probably retired to Blackpol where he died in 1932, aged 88 (or earlier in Bolton)
1863 Charles Mather Charles married Nancy Thomasson on 13 Aug 1891. 1865 Mary Jane Mather Mary J, aged 6 in 1871 and Jane in 16 in 1881, so probably known most commonly as Jane.

Mary James Mather married George Entwistle on 5 May 1888 at Walmsley
1868 Hannah (Anne) Mather Anne, aged 3 in 1871, but later known as Hannah (13 in 1881).

Hannah married Charles Corless 12 June 1897 at Walmslet Christ Church
1872 Margaret (Maggie) Mather 1874 Thomas Mather Thomas married Elizabeth Baxendale (RO).  They had been married 8 years in 1911, with two children, Phyllis and Alice.

Elizabeth may have been a widow, previously married to Thomas Baxendale from Chorley (TBC).
1877 Alice Mather Alice married Joseph Waddicar at Walmsley Christ Church on 3 Dec 1896, and they had one daughter Annie, aged 14 in 1911.

Hannah Mather, Alice's mother was living with them in 1911.
1880 Sarah Mather Sarah married George Crowther from Edgworth, 4 Feb 1882 at Walmsley Christ Church. 1882 Amos Mather 1884 Elizabeth Mather Elizabeth never knew her father, who died around the same time she was born.

Elizabeth married William Handel Garbelt at Walmsley Christ Church 12 Aug 1908
1823 Elizabeth Holden Elizabeth's father was Richard Holden, a Quarryman in 1845 and after a Farmer in 1864 (as shown by daughter Elizabeth's two marriage certificates).

In 1845, Elizabeth married Amdrew Mather and was married 14 years before Andrew died in 1859.  They had 7 children.

In 1864, Elizabeth Mather from Turton married Isaac Mather from Entwistle, son of James Mather the farmer. They were widow and eidower, bu Isaac was only shown as a bachelor, although clearly he had married Betty Marsden 25 years earlier.
1825 - 1859 Andrew Mather 34 34 Andrew, 17 was with his parents at Sunnyside (farm), Edgworth in 1841.

Wife Elizabeth was a Widower in 1861 with 7 children, and the  youngest, Andrew, was 2.
1819 Margaret (Peggy) Mather For some reason, only the mother (Sarah) is recorded on the baptism.  It could be that this is another Sarah Mather and was unmarried, and possibly married Joshua Webster, a cabinet maker on 22 Aug 1819, just 2 weeks before Peggy was born, but then why use the maiden name?

Margaret Mather, daughter of Isaac, a landlord married William Garside in 1839
1832 Peter Settle Indexed as "Peter Sottle" (in error) 1814 - 1893 Isaac Mather 78 78 Isaac was a farm servant, son of James Mather, a farmer from Entwistle.  He was the son of James (recorded on marriage), and was a weaver, 26 in 1841 living near his father at Edge Fold.

In 1841, Isaac and Betty (26 & 22) were at Edge Fold, Edgworth and had Betty (aged 1).

1851 Isaac (37) is a farmer of 16 acres at Entwistle with wife Betty (32), daughter Elizabeth (11), and James (9), Sophia (5), Simon (2) and Luke (1mo).

1871 Isherwood fold - Isaac (b.Turton, 56, farmer of 9 acres), Elizabeth (50, b.Darwen) with Luke (20), William (17), Ruth (16) etc

1881 Isaac, 67, still farming at Isherwood fold farm, Edgworth but now with wife Isabella (66).
1780 - >1823 Thomas Mather 43 43 In 1823, Thomas (his father) left 2 cottages in Darcy Lever, in possession of John Fletcher and his son Thomas Mather, to his son Thomas Mather
~1775 - <1823 Betty Mather 48 48 In 1823, Thomas left 2 cottages in Darcy Lever, in possession of Samuel Martin and Nathaniel Warburton, to the daughters of his late daughter Betty Hulme.

12 Sep 1824 Betty Mather, Spinster of Darcy Lever, had a daughter Alice baptised, but this is probably another, possibly a  niece.
1778 John Mather John's father left one cottage in King Street, Great Bolton, to son John Mather. 1784 - 1813 Richard Mather 29 29 In his fathers of 1823 will it records that late son Richard had children. James Hulme 1819 - 1876 Solomon Mather 57 57 WARNING: Another family; Richard Mather married Mary Scowcroft in 1844 and had Robert (1845) and 3 daughters Frances, Esther and Alice (registered Bury N).

There are several (4) Solomon Mathers in our tree, and not all are related.  This Solomon was a printer at Elton near Bury, so it was likely he was.  However, his family appears to have originated from Blackburn.

Coalheaver in 1851
Printer in 1858 - 1863
Block Printer in 1866 - 1868
Labourer (at Iron Foundry) in 1870 and 1871
Driller in 1878

In 1836 Solomon and Jane lived at 68 Victoria Street, Elton.  Jane may have been spending too much on fashion (see news clip) as Solomon had to stop her credit.

In 1871, Solomon (52, Widower) was with still with his daughter Rachel (13) at Elton.  All the other daughters had married.  John Hampson (33, maried) was a visitor.
1789 - 1854 Solomon Mather 64 64 There is no baptism record for this Solomon.  We know he was born 1789 in Turton from his death record (aged 64) and census returns. However it is unlikely he is the son of the other Solomon from Turton who married Martha in 1790, as there are early Turton baptism records for his children, Betty and James in 1791 and 1792.  Therefore, this Solomon is more likely to be the son of one of his brothers, most likely Isaac.  This would also explain the name of their first son Isaac in 1812 and the 4 yesr gap in birth after they married..

Solomon's wife was Mary Grime.  The Manchester Mercury (Tue 6 Apr 1819) records Peter Howcroft, William Entwistle, James  Grime, Solomon Mather (and others) were all transported for 14 years for having forged bank notes.  The Lancaster Gazette also shows Solomon was aged 29, so this is him!  This is also listed in the England and Wales Criminal Register.
He was released after 6 of his 14 year sentence and returned to his wife Mary where it appears he had two more children after a 15 year gap.

1829 - 1830 Amos and Fanny are born and baptised at Egworth Independant, and after that there's no trace of Amos.

In 1841, Solomon and Mally were at Edgworth, Solomon an Ag. Labourer.  They had daughter Alice Hargreves (25, F.S.) and her daughter Margret (4) with them.

in 1839 when Isaac married, he recorded his father as a Mechanic.

Solomon never learned his lessons.  He was put down again for 6 months in 1849 for keeping a disorderly house (probably the Talbot Inn).

Solomon and Mally were alive in 1851, with Solomon a Publican at the Talbot, 18 Brown Street, L.B.  He had his daughter Alice Hargreves with him working as the cook.  John and Elizabeth Mather (both born about 1808) were also at Brown Street in 1841, so may be relaed.

In 1853, Solomon is shows at the Talbot, 18 Brown Street in the Whellan & Co Trade Directory.  James Grime (probably  related to his wife Mary Grime) was at the Wagon and Horses, 172 Blackburn Street, Little Bolton.  His son Isaac also had a Ber House at Edgworth.

Solomon left a Will, probate dated 29 Apr 1854, where he is described as an Inn Keeper.

Solomon's death in April 1854 was reported in the Bolton hronical: "On the 13th inst., very suddenly, Mr Solomon Mather of the Talbot Inn, Brown Street, Little Bolton."

The Talbot Inn (also known as the Old Dog) closed in 1879.
1822 James Mather In Oct 1840, James was a painter (or printer), son of Solomon a Joiner when he married Maria Carruthers.

No baptism for James, which is perhaps not surprising as he was probably illegitimate. Solomon father was a Publican in 1873.  However, this Solomon was in Jail in 1822 when James was Born !!

There is a James Mather (16) in Newchurch, Haslingden in 1841 with Fanny (possibly Mary his Mother) and two siblings, Elizabeth (20), and Alice (13).

In Feb 1873, James (51, Widow), a General Dealer, son of Solomon a Publican married Mary Murgatroyd.  This cant be the same James Hardware Dealer (born ca.1812 L.B. and married to Mary from Leeds, as they are both on the census in 1871 and 1881.
1826 Mary Murgatroyd In 1873, Mary (47, spinster) from the Burnley Road, daughter of William Murgatroyd a wool sorter married James Mather (51). 1828 - >1881 Mary Ann Harding(?) 53 53 Mary (Mary Ann in 1861) was from Leeds and 5 to 11 years younger than James. 1854 James Edward Davis James Edward Davis was aged 7 in 1861, living in Wardleworth as a "boarder" with James and Mary Mather.

By 1871, James Edward is 17, still in Wardleworth and now described as James and Mary's son.
1858 Elizabeth A Mather ~1822 Maria Carruthers Daughter of John, a Butcher 1852 Sarah Ann Mather 1840 Martha Mather Martha (7 months) was with her parents James and Maria at Cabbage Row, Radcliffe in 1841. 1831 Fanny Mather There's a Fanny Mather, born 22 Oct 1835 (Dau of John and Mary) and baptised at Prestwich, Lancashire, who is probably the person who married Richard Hodson in 1863.

There is also a Fanny Mather, aged 7 in 1841, daughter of Thomas and Betty of Little Bolton.
~1780 Henry Warburton 1776 Mary Mather Mary Mather of Little Bolton was the mother of Isaac, baptised 8 Jun 1800.  No father is named.

Mary wasn't mentioned directly in her fathers will in 1823.  However, "one cottage in Little Bolton, in the occupation of Barnabas Kitchen, was left to son in law, Henry Warburton, her husband.  Perhaps she was deceased.
~1760 Thomas Mather ~1760 Elizabeth Garswood 1787 - 1787 Peter Mather 2m 2m Born Breightmet.
Peter son of Thomas & Betty
1765 - 1842 Thomas Mather 77 77 The Thomas, son of Joshua and Margaret is another from Walton-Le-Dale.  That Thomas married Jenny Rigby.

Possibly brother of Robert Mather, b.about 1766 who had a son Lambert Mather.

There seems to be no 1841 Turton census record for Thomas, yet he died in 1842 and is buried at St. Anne's. Perhpas he was the 70y old Shoe Maker, retired at Walton-le-Dale yet burial says of Edgworth

1838 Betty Crompton 1808 - 1878 James Mather 70 70 Assumed to be Son or Rachel, based in 1851 census both are at "New House".  James is a farmer, and his mother Rachel a Logding House Keeper.  As the oldest son, he got the farm.

In 1831, James (or his father) was witness at John's marriage to Jane Entwistle

Brother John & Jane Mather had Charles (b.1832), John (b.1834) and Ralph (b.1835) at Edgworth independant while at New House, Entwistle in 1841.

Lived at Old Barn, Entwistle (Silk weaver, 1841 census)

In 1878, James died at Newhouse Farm (see probate)
1813 Charles Mather What happed to Charles?  No marriage and no Lancashire death record?  Did he leave Lancashire maybe?

There is a Charles Mather, cotton weaver of the correct age, born Middleton and married to Margaret.  This is the son of John Mather, a tailor and Sally of Middleton.

In 1837, there is a Charles Mather born about 1787 who married Martha Wright in Mottram in Longdendale, St. Michael

There is also another Charles from Eccles (born Worsley) that married Ellen.  He was a Wheelwright and Joiner.

17 Nov 1883, Charles Mather, Roller Maker, son of James Mather a Carder married Ruth Ware dau of John Ware at St Peter, Bolton. Both of full age from Little Bolton.  This must also be another.
~1819 James Knowles James, the same age as Jane, was a neighbour of the Mathers at Sunnyside at Higher House Folds in 1841. 1841 - 1890 Abel Mather 49 49 Able, 5 months (illegitimate) was at Sunnyside, Edgworth with his mother and grandparents in 1841.  His father, James Knowles lived at the neighbouring Higher House farm, and his youngest brother was also Abel.

Abel's first marriage was to Sarah Ann Phillips in 1863.  She was 7 months pregnant when she married in October, as Sarah Jane was born in December.  This and the following marriage show his father as James Knowles, a farmer.

In 1877 he was a widower at Bridge Street, Manchester and married a much older Elizabeth Sunder, a widow.

Able married three times.  His third marriage was to Selenia White 25 Aug 1881 when they were living at 13 Bridge Street, Manchester.

Another Abel Mather, son of John and Ann was baptised in Warrington in Nov 1841.

In 1851, William and Alice (30 & 26) were at Bradshaw Chapel.  Richard was a Block Printer.  They had two sons Richard and Robert (5 & 2), and Alice's young sister Jane (22) and nephew Rueben (1).

In May 1866, William and Alice Crawshaw (42 & 41) travelled to Quebec with their daughters Emma and May (14 & 6)
1852 - 1852 Henry Mather 21d 21d 1792 - 1860 Esther Mather 68 68 Esther married Benjamin (aka Bennett) Isherwood of Bolton Parish, Weaver on 4 Sep 1811.  She was only 19 and a half.  She went on to have 10 children, the last (Alice) in 1838, aged 46.

Sisters Ann and Esther married two Isherwood (second cousins?) on the same day 4 Sep 1811.

In 1841, Bennett & Esther Isherwood (50 & 45) were at Nuttall, Holcombe with Ann and Jane (12 & 10).

In 1851, Esther (59, head) was living with her extended familiy st Nuttall, Tottongton.

1790 - 1875 Ann Mather 84 84 Ann may have had an illegitimate son James in April 1811.

Ann married Ralph Isherwood (1811) or Thomas Horrocks (1817) in Bolton or Isaac Turner (1813) in Deane (but no match for Turton 1801-1818).  Actually sisters Ann and Esther married two Isherwood cousins? on the same day 4 Sep 1811.

Another possibility is in 1838 Ann Mather, dau of Isaac Mther of Edgworth married John Nelson, a shoe maker of Edgworth.

In 1851, Ann (60, Head, Wid) and 7 children (one probably a grandchild, 8wks) are living in Peters Street, Preston.
1779 - 1843 Henry Smith 64 64 Henry and Betty lived at Tottington after they married, and moved to Elton about 1805 where Henry was a Shopkeeper.

Henry and betty probably moved away from Elton to Bolton.  Daughters Sarah and Susannah were married at Bolton.

Henry must have retired and moved to Lymm in Cheshire,  The burial, aged 64, at his home villiage of Tottington records Lymm as his last abode.
~1780 Betty Rigby 1810 Mary Smith 1808 Samuel Smith 1804 John Smith 1802 James Smith James was baptised at Tottington in Nov 1802.  He was one of the first to be baptised there, as the church was only founded and baptisms began 1 Sep 1799. 1806 Henry Smith 1819 - 1894 Susanna Smith 74 74 There is another Susanna and Martha Smith, daughters of Betty & Jacob who were in the 1841 Bury census. 1819 - 1894 Dennis Leach 75 75 Dennis is the son of Thomas Leach.

Dennis Leach emigrated to USA.  He arrived in New York from Liverpool on the Queen of the West 13-Dec-1844 and Nationalised 13-Jan-1853

Dennis's estate was left to his daughter Elizabeth Manning and Sarah Alice Leighton, wife of Edward Creighton.  Dennis's wif must have been devistated, and died shortly after in April 1894.
1843 Elizabeth Leach Elizabeth married Emmet P Manning in 1875.

They had Clark R (b.1869) and Clara aka Daisy (b.1871), before they were married it appears!
1796 - 1867 Isaac Mather 71 71 Isaac born 1796 was a bastard son of Mary Mather of Little Bolton.  No farther is given, although Mary Mather, if the same person, married Henry Warburton by licence in April 1801.

He may have had a brother Jacob.  Also a posible brother of Alice Mather, wife of Samuel (both from Turton).

A Weaver in 1816 when married, and 1817 - >1822

In 1841, Isaac Mather (45) was a Beer Seller with his second wife Jane (50) at the Old White Horse, Wallbach, Edgworth.  His children Joseph, Alice, Peter, Jacob, Jane, and Sarah were with him.

The Old White Horse was taken over by Annis Bromily, an unmarried woman, aged 66 in 1851.  Isaac was a neighbour, but now farming 28 acres (with his family).

In 1844 Isaac was an Out Worker when daughter Alice of Edgworth Moor married William Crowshaw

Isaac Mather continued to be a beer seller in Edgworth, and is listed in the 1853 and 1855 trade directories.

In 1861, Isaac (65) was a widower, lodging with his son Joseph at Doffer (or Dosser) Fold (next to Buckley Fold), Radcliffe.

In 1863, Old Isaac mat have married Mary Haddock at Bury RO (TBC).

Isaac died in 1867 and his death was registered at Bury.
1798 - 1881 Joseph Mather 83 83 Joseph Mather (farmer) and Elizabeth were at Higher Know Mill, with Abraham and Alice Settle (nee Mather) with their father Isaac (aged 80) at Know Mill, Edgworth in 1841.  With the absence of baptism records for this period, Its is therefore assumed Alice and Joseph are siblings.

In 1858, Joseph was a Publican and Farmer when daughter Alice married.

Joseph (63) and Betty (57) were still farming 4 acres in 1861, at Bromley Cross, Turton, and Joseph was also a beerseller.  He is listed at the Railway Hotel, Bromiley Cross, Turton in Worrall's Trade Directory.  At the same time, John Kay was a farmer at Mather fold and also a beer retailer at Cox green.

In 1881 Joseph died a Gentleman at Breightmet.
1865 George Entwistle 1866 Nancy Tomlinson Nancy was the daughter of John Tomlinson, a farmer from Walmsley 1785 - 1841 James Mather 56 56 WARNING: There are several problems with the placement of James here.  Instead, he may be the son of Isaac and Alice.

Two James's, son of James and Betty got baptised.  First Methodist, and then CoE (both at Turton, 4 months appart).  One was the son of Betty Knowles, the other of Betty Lyon.

James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.

James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm!

In 1804, Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18.  He was discharged in 1818. This must be another!

Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).

In 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle.  Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage).  With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).

In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63).  She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.

James may be the son of Thomas from D.L.  James was left nothing in his father Thomas' will of 1823.  Perhaps because he had moved away from the family.  However, birth is 2 years out, but closest match.

James and Mary, Crofter (when married) or Ag Labourer (1841 census) at Mount Pleasant, Edgworth in 1841.
1773 - 1854 James Mather 81 81 James was married to Mary from Scotland in 1841 and 1851.

In 1851, James and Maria were at Back Road, Sharples with two children and two lodgers.  They lived in Sharples till 1854 when they moved to Turton.

From 1854 to 1860, Nanny, Timothy, Ellen and Rachel's births were registered at Turton.

In 1871, Charles was an Engineer at the Cotton Mill, married to Esther with 6 children.  Sons Amos and Andrew seems to be reoccuring family names.

In 1881, Esther (44) was with the children in Over Darwen.  Charles (48, Engine Tenter) may have left Esther as was out of work, boarding in Blackburn, but it may be because his son Charles had just married a few days earlier.

In 1891, Charles (58, Engineman) is still boarding in Blackburn, away from his family.

In 1901, Charles, 69, an engine tenter was an inmate in the Blackburn Workhouse.

In 1891 there is no record!

In 1907 the family were living at 62 Rawsthorn Street (near All Souls). Ernest and Hannah both recorded this as their address when they both married.

In 1911, John & Elizabeth (62 & 59) had son James (21) and daughter Annie Woodward (25), living at Myrrrh Street, Little Bolton.

John died in 1922, aged 74
1850 Hannah Mather In 1851, Hannah was recorded as daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, 9 mo. However the birth record does not name the father.  In 1861, Hannah is shown as a granddaughter, aged 9, so is most likely an illegitimate daughter of one of their under-aged daughters, i.e. Alice or Ann, so brought up by her grandparents.

In 1870 Hannah married Samuel son of John Naylor at Walmsley. The marriage record confirms Hannah was illegitimate.

In 1874, Hannah's brother John married Elizabeth Naylor. This may be Samuel Naylor's sister (TBC).

In 1871, Samuel and Hannah Naylor (both 22) are at Higher End, Little Bolton.

In 1881, Samuel and Hannah Naylor (31 & 30) were at 2 Grove Street, Halliwell with three children.

In 1871, Sarah J is aged 5,

In 1881, Sarah L Mather (16, born Edgworth) is a servant at the Red Lion Pub, Quarlton.
1848 Samuel Naylor In 1851, Samuel (3) was with his parents John and Mary (24 & 22) at Darwen.

Samuel and Hannah married 1870 at Walmsley Christ Church. They lived in Sharples till 1875 when they moved to Little Bolton. About 1880 they moved again to Halliwell (all based on their children's birth registrations)

In 1871, Samuel and Hannah (both 22) were at Higher End, Little Bolton.

In 1881, Samuel and Hannah Naylor (31 & 30) were at 2 Grove Street, Halliwell with three children.
1834 Ralph Entwistle In 1861, Ralph (26) was married to Betty (33) and had daughters Margaret (6) and Jane (1). They were in a private house in Middleton and also had 3 boarders.

In 1871, Ralph and Alice (37 & 43) were at Egerton, Turton with Margaret (16), Jane (11), Sarah (15), Mary A (8), Anne (1) and Walter (3mo).  The births are out of order suggesting some mat be step-daughters.  Only Annie and Walter are from the current marriage to Alice Mather (married 1868).
1855 Sarah Mather In 1871, Sarah was not with Ralph. She is probably an illegitimate daughter of Alice, and with her in 1881.

In 1881, Sarah "MATHER" (25) was the daughter of Ralph and Alice Entwistle, and he had a granddaughter Sarah Alice Mather (1) staying with him, probably Sarah's illegitimate daughter.
1863 Mary Ann Entwistle 1869 Annie Entwistle In 1911, Annie & Walter (41 & 40) were still single and with their mother Alice (82). 1871 Walter Entwistle In 1911, Annie & Walter (41 & 40) were still single and with their mother Alice (82). 1854 Margaret Entwistle 1859 Jane Entwistle 1828 Betty Shaw 1864 - 1867 Elizabeth Entwistle 3 3 1874 Sarah J Naylor 1876 Samuel Naylor 1879 John Naylor 1848 Ann Dewhurst 1870 Mary Ann Mather 1872 Margaret Elizabeth Mather 1876 (William) Henry Mather William Henry, but known as Henry 1882 Edmund Mather 1884 Robert Mather 1874 - 1874 Thomas Mather <unknown> 1855 Alice A Mather The 1855 birth record suggests Alice is a bastard child.

In 1871, Alice and Thomas (16 and 8) were with their grandmother Hannah (66).  Jane (30) and John (21) were also present and Jane is the likely mother (John is too young).
1863 Thomas Mather The 1863 birth record suggests Thomas is a bastard child.

In 1871, Alice and Thomas (16 and 8) were with their grandmother Hannah (66).  Jane (30) and John (21) were also present and Jane is the likely mother (John is too young).

Isaac was missing in 1871. Therefore, the death of Isaac H Mather in 1866 could be him, but actually no - that's Isaac Henry Mather son of Wright Mather.

Thomas was probably William's brother and Alice died in childbirth (1844, aged 23, Darwen, ref:D/5/46).  She was then adopted and baptised by William and Nancy.

18 April 1888, Sarah Ann Holden (48), daughter of William Holden (Dec, Blacksmith) was a Widow when she married john Buckley (57, Widower).
1859 Nancy Holden Nancy and Hannah's mothers maiden name is shown as ECCLES.  There is no marriage of William Holden to ECCLES, although there are many others incliding John Holden at Darwen.  It seems Nancy and Hannah's parents are John and Alice 1860 Hannah Holden Nancy and Hannah's mothers maiden name is shown as ECCLES.  There is no marriage of William Holden to ECCLES, although there are many others incliding John Holden at Darwen.  It seems Nancy and Hannah's parents are John and Alice 1839 Alice Eccles 1843 - 1843 Thomas Holden There are other MATHER+HOLDEN births, including some before William and Nancy married, and it is possible Thomas is of another Darwen family. In 1831, Jane was NOT at Old Acres.  However in 1805 (poor list) Richard Mather was an occupier (one of many) at Old Acres.  In the 1796 valuation, Richard Mather was  occupier at 46 Old Acres, Bradshaw Gate, West Side.

In 1841, Jane (70), with her assumed niece or granddaughter Alice (15), living at Old Acres, E Bolton.

Jane died in 1843, aged 74

Note: Old Acres in Bolton Town Center was later (about 1885) renamed Great Moor Street.
