Born at Hartshead, Stalybridge, Ashton, Yorkshire (Vol 8d, p 457).

In 1861, the family had moved north and living at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington.

In 1871 Albert (18, a Slater) and his father George (48, a Mason) were lodging with Joseph and Hannah Smith and their two children at Gilstead, Bingley.

A veteran marksman has passed away in the person of Mr. Albert Stocks, (70), 45. Thompson Street who died at that address on Saturday, January 21st.
Mr Stocks, who was born at Stalybridge, joined the West Riding Yeomanry at an early ago and came to Birkenhead about 40 years ago.  Taking up, his quarters with the Cheshire Engineers, he was soon advanced to the rank of Company Seargent Major and became one of the regiments crack shots. In 1891 he joined the King’s Liverpool’s, and in 1893 won the Queens Bronze and Silver medals.

He was in the last 100 of the Queen’s in 1890, 1892, 1893, 1895 and 1896 and win the third prize in 1892.

Lodging with Father George and Smith family (Joseph and Martha Smith) at Bingley, Yorkshire in 1871.  Possibly a relation to his future wife Jane Smith, 2 years hence, but cant find a link.

Married 29 March 1873, just 4 months before his father George died at Oxford Street, Bingley.

Married and living at Heather Bank, Bingley, Yorkshire in 1881

Living at 5 Cobden St., Birkenhead in 1891.
1829 - 1857 Ruth Stocks 28 28 Living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851 with parents Job and Lucy.

No matching record of death for Ruth Stocks in Huddersfield, so may have got married June-1853 or Mar-1856.  However, Emma is believed to be her daughter, so perhaps she died.
1832 - >1895 Martha Stocks 63 63 Living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851 with parents Job and Lucy

Married about Sep-1852 in Huddersfield

Martha Brook, living in Almondbury, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1861 with four young children.
1826 - 1883 Susannah Stocks 57 57 Susanna living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 with parents Job and Lucy.  Her adult baptism records her as the second child.

Susana married to William ib 1848 and next door to her parents, Job and Lucy in 1851.
1862 Joe Henry Brooke 1766 - 1807 George Stocks 41 41 As well as George and Mary Stocks, there was also a Charles and Sarah Stocks family in Berry Brow, perhaps a brother of George. 1830 Thomas “John” Brook According to his Marriage Banns, Thomas's father was Benjamin Brook.

Sometime between 1851 and 1871, Thomas seems to have changed his name to John.
1855 Ann Brook 1852 Bessy Brook 1857 Eliza Brook 1859 Sarah Hannah Brook 1851 - 1916 Samuel Edward Stocks 65 65 Born at Dukinfield, just south of Stalybridge, Lancashire (Cheshire on 1851 census).  Was 1 month old on 1851 census.  Brother Albert was born 2 years later at Hartshead, a few miles north of Staleybridge.

Moved further north to live at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington in 1861

"Saml Edwd Stocks" on 1871 census, living with Sarah Ann Miller and her family in Witton, Cheshire.

Living at 14 Brougham St., Tranmere, Birkenhead in 1881.

Living at 194 Peel Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead (as a single household) in 1891.

Still there in 1901, but away from Sarah Ann, living with Sarah, Samuel and Susannah.  He was buried with his brother in 1916, so may have separated.

By 1911, all Samuels children had married (except John who had also left home), so Samuel was lodging with the Ridley family in Chester.  Timothy Ridley (Head, aged 53)was a houise Hoiner and his son John Henry a draughtsman, so possibly Samuel was working as part of their family business.

In 1911 (and I asume also in 1916) William Martin Harnman, wife Emily and children Emily (18), Lily (17), William Arthur (15) and George Henry (14) wre living at 33 Sidney St., Lower Tranmere.  Probably as the daughters married and left home, they had space for a lodger and Samuel moved in as his final address before he died.
1824 - >1862 Rebecca Ann Robinson 38 38 Full name is "Rebecca Ann", confirmed by christening record and mothers name on son Albert's birth certificate.  She was born at Longwood, about 500m from Leymoor, and also close to Quarmby Cum Lingley.

She used the name "Rebecca" in 1849 when she got married and on the 1851 census, but went by the name of "Ann" on the 1861 census, so although Rebecca was her first or official name, she probably went by the name of Ann.

She was living in Ley Moor, Golcar in 1841 with mother Hannah and sister Betty.  Named "Rebekah" on the 1841 Census.

Milnsbridge (spelled "Mills Bridge" on her wedding certificate) was the home of Rebecca Robinson before she was married to George Stocks in 1849.  Milnsbridge is just over the railway line from Longwood, where Rebecca was born (according to 1861 census).

Rebecca Robinson (b.1821, age 20) living in Dock Street with James and Mary Stuttard and family.  This is the only recorded Rebecca Robinson in Huddersfield in 1841, but her age appears a little old, and this is the wrong person.
Rebekah Robinson (b.1826) is a better match, living with sister Betty (b.1832) and mother Hannah (b.1796) in Golcar.

The 1851 census is a key record:  Rebecca was living at 30 Back Grosvenor St., Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Lancashire with George and Son Samuel (1 month old).

Called Rebecca in 1841, 1849 and 1851, but then Ann in  1861.  She died before 1871 (when George was recorded as Widower).
1802 - 1872 Lucy Crosland 70 70 Lucy is my 3x great grandmother.  She was living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851

Lucy was ill and lost her left hand in 1870.  She died two years later.

Living in Berry Brow, Almondbury in 1871 with husband Job (Lucie on census) and grandson George Brook.
1824 - 1873 George Stocks 49 49 Living with Parents (Job, Lucy) and family in 1841 in Berry Brow, Almondbury, Huddersfield (which is where he got married to Rebecca in 1849).

Living at 32 Back Grosvenor St., Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Lancashire in 1851 with 2 lodgers (George and Ann Gleddile) and 1m old son Samuel.

Living at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington in 1861 with both sons.

Lodging with Son Albert and Smith family (Joseph and Martha) at Gilstead, Bingley, Yorkshire in 1871.

NOTE: Dont confuse another George Stocks (29, porter) from Huddersfield married to Rebecca (24) from Manchester in Birkenhead in 1861. They are too young.

NOTE: There is another George stocks, Stonemason, (not the same parson as our George who was with "Ann" in 1861) of similar age married Letitia Craige (Irish) in 1858 on the Wriial.
1803 - 1879 Job Stocks 75 75 Job is my 3x great-grandfather. Do not confuse with Job the Bookkeeper (b.1775), or Job the Cloth Dresser (b.1825)

Living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851 (and 1849 when George Married Rebecca).  Willian, Susana and Emma are neighbours of Job and Lucy in 1851

Living in Berry Brow, Almondbury in 1871 with wife Lucy and grandson George Brook.

According to a letter to his nephew Joseph, Job cared for Benjamin and Sarah in their final years.

Job became infirm about 1875 and stopped earning.  He and daughter Susannah were supported by Alfred Healy, (assumed to be an agent of his nephew Joseph).

According to the Banns, William's father was Joseph.
1850 - 1917 Emma Horsfall 66 66 Apears twice on 1851 census (on same page), but only one Emma Stocks birth registered before the census.

Aged 1 on 1851 and 12 on 1861 census living with Grandparents Job and Lucy Stocks at Park Gate, Almondbury (although cesus shows she was clearly born in Huddersfield).

She's also a Stocks, and order on 1851 census return (under Ruth) implies she is possibly an illegitamate daughter of Ruth.

Emma Horsfall was witness to her cousin Albert Stock's marriage to Jane Smith in March 1873.

After moving to Halifax, Elsie, Enoch and Emma ere back living in Huddersfield in 1911.
1799 - 1799 Michael Stocks 4m 4m 1806 - 1806 Ruth Stocks 2m 2m Only marriage I can find is between Ruth Stocks and John Howarth, 14-Mar-1833 at Mirfield.  This is about 8 miles from Berry Brow on the other side of Huddersfield, so is not a good match.  It is more likely Ruth died as a child. There are baptism and burial records for this Ruth, father named as George.

Also, another Ruth, daughter of George Stocks, was buried at Almondbury, 3-Aug-1803, aged 2.
1738 - 1819 Elizabeth Perkin 81 81 Elizabeth was from DeadManStone (in 1757), Almondbury according to Marriage.  She continued to live here through both marriages until at least 1779. 1763 - 1763 <child> Stocks ? 1769 Sarah (Sally) Stocks Another Sally Stocks was christened on 7-Mar-1769, father Joshia, but this Sally died after 23 days.  At these times, Sally was an uncommon name (although used as a nickname for Sarah), so probably Joseph and Joshua were brothers, naming their children the same!

There is no marriage record for Sally from Almondbury.
1778 - 1778 <child> Stocks ? 1779 - 1779 <child> Stocks ? 1786 - 1855 Betty Stocks 69 69 1788 - 1791 Esther Stocks 3 3 1790 Susannah Stocks Susannah's children were born at Newsome, between Lockwood and Berry Brow.  Susannah was only 27 when her first husband died at Newsome in 1817.  She probably remarried John Hirst in 1818. Her children would have been brought up by John.

Son George left home to become a School Master at Newsome.  He later lived with his cousin.

Daughter Rebecca married in 1835.
1793 Esther Stocks Esther may have married Thomas Buthroyd and had a daughter Mary, baptised 26 May 1817. 1773 Susannah Stocks Susannah may have married William Tate in 1811, but she would have been quite old at 33. 1831 - 1860 Jonadab Brook 29 29 Jonadab's parents were "Jonn Brook" and Betty.

in 1853 Jonadab was a weaver from Berry Brow (when Mary was baptised)
1857 George Brook Job and Lucy's grandson, living with them in Almondbury in 1861

Was a pupil at Wilmslow, Altrincham in 1871

George Brook (aged 24) was living with his cousins Emma and Enoch Geldgill and mother Susannah Horsfall in 1881
~1801 - 1845 Jonathon Brook 44 44 In the 1820/30s, Jonathan and Mary probably lived at Whitestones, Stocksmoor in the township of Thurstonland and Parish of Kirkburton. Today there is a small group of houses "Whitestones", on Stocks Moor Road, which is probably where son Johadab (and others) were born.

Jonathan probably had a sister Maria Brook (b.1804).  In 1851, Maria lived at Dog Hall, Lockwood had a son John Pearson, and Isaac (22), Jondab (19), William (16), and Thomas (15) as step-children.
D. 1839 Betty Moorhouse 1835 Thomas Brook 1782 - 1841 Matthew Gledhill 59 59 Matthew's father was Benjamin Gledhill, who was christened on 5-Jan-1760 in Almondbury.  His father was also Benjamin (c.12-Nov-1730) and his father John Gledhill. 1805 David Gledhill David was baptised at the Independant by Buddersfield.  Before then, there a family by Parents Matthew and Susanah Geldhill with baptisms here, so David my be from a different (older) Matthew, and from his second marriage.

A David Gledhill, born about 1803 married Jane Taylor at Almondbury in 1852.  His father was James.
1807 <male> Gledhill 1796 - 1875 Benjamin Stocks 78 78 Did Benjamin marry twice?  There's only one Benjamin Stocks in Almondbury, and another in Huddersfield who was married to Hannah Barber.  He seems to have stopped having his children baptised after George in 1825 (except for Ann in 1837, 7 years after she was born)

Benjamin was a Cloth Dresser from Berry Brow until at least 1841 (when he was 45), and later perhaps a mechanic and worked in the factories of Yorkshire, never travelling to the US (c.f. Job W. Stocks biograpohy)
~1852 Enoch Gledhill Enoch and Emma moved to Halifax between 1891 and 1901.

Elsie, Enoch and Emma ere back living in Huddersfield in 1911.
1884 Elsie Gledhill Elsie, an only child, was single and living with both parents in 1901 in Halifax and 1911 in Huddersfield (aged 27)

Elsie, Enoch and Emma were back living in Huddersfield in 1911.  Daughter Elsie Mayer Gledhill, aged 27, is recorded as adopted.
1829 - 1881 Samuel Gledhill 52 52 Samuel may have been in Cookridge Hospital in 1881, just before he died. 1828 Martha Hoyle Martha Hoyle or Persevell, but Hoyle is a slightly better match on the 1841 census. 1852 Henry Gledhill 1856 Nathan Gledhill 1834 William Brook 1782 - 1817 William Tate 34 34 1815 Rebecca Tate 1808 John Roebuck John was a Joiner.  Strange and confusing that he should name two daughters Eliza and Elizabeth but he did!  Elizabeth (5), Eliza (4) and Martha (2) were all with him in 1841 at Misy Lane Bottom, Honley. 1835 Elizabeth Roebuck 1837 - 1875 Eliza Roebuck 38 38 1838 Martha Roebuck There is also another Martha Roebuck, daughter of Eli and Harriot, born the same year in Almondbury.

Martha may have had a twin, Mary who died as a baby.  Mar was Christened on the same day but never made it on the 1841 census.
1829 - 1894 Joseph (Joe) Boocock 65 65 1875 Martha Ann Boocock 1868 John Roebuck Boocock 1873 Charlotte Boocock 1870 - 1876 Mary Ellen Roebuck 6 6 ~1863 Ann Boocock 1852 Alfred Boocock 1854 Joshua Boocock 1830 - 1866 Mary Leak 36 36 1859 Sarah Eliza Boocock 1861 - 1862 Emma Boocock 9m 9m 1867 Fred Brooke Fred married Annie, and was with her and his mother Martha in 1901 1857 Robert C Hirst 1849 Emma Stocks Emma, Grandaughter, aged 1 on 1851 census with Job and Licy.

On marriage certificate of Margaret Emma Stocks, Age 21 (on 6 Jun 1870), Spinster, Almondbury, Father George Stocks, Mason.  However, this may have been the other George Stocks who was also a Stone Mason of similar age.
1801 - 1803 Ruth Stocks 2 2 1810 Esther Gledhill Esther Bradley (41), wife of Robert (45), with sons Matthew (17) and Joe (1) and Mother-in-Law Betty Gledhill (65) are living in Almondbury in 1851. 1815 Ruth Gledhill On 1841 census, at Berry Brow, aged 25 1821 - 1903 Matthew Gledhill 82 82 On 1841 census, at Berry Brow, aged 20, Woolen weaver.

Matthew married Lydia Moorhouse 27 Feb 1848.

Matthey emigrated to the USA in 1848 and was Nationalised 13 May 1856.  He died Providence, Rhode Island in 1903.
1823 Hamor Gledhill On 1841 census, at Berry Brow, aged 18, Fancy Weaver.

Hamor emigrated to Massachusetts, USA 12-Sep-1860.  He married Elizabeth Henderson (1818-1906) and had a daughter Bessie, born in Connecticcut about 1862.

John Hamer 1835 Elizabeth Gledhill 1815 George Gledhill George and Ann Gledhill were Lodgers with George and Rebecca Stocks in 1851, assumed to be cousins.

This is not the George son of William, a weaver, who married Ann Shaw at Huddersfield in 1857 (wrong ages).  It may be someone unralated, or possibly a cousin, son of Matthew.
1812 Ann Gledhill 1836 - 1844 Alfred Gleadhill 8 8 Moyther Mary, so not Ruth's child 1847 Thomas Stocks Thomas Stocks, while still a young man, carved the first sculpture of a steam train on the rocks above Berry Brow station platform in 1864, at the request of Mr Thomas Swinburn, chief engineer on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Huddersfield to Sheffield line. 1842 Sarah Dawson 1864 Harry Dawson 1870 John Charles Stocks 1877 Martha Ann Stocks 1818 - 1880 Charles Stocks 62 62 Living at Park Gate, Berry Brow in 1851 1817 - 1895 Hannah (Ann) Boothroyd 78 78 Recorded as Ann on Marriage, with Michael Boothroyd from Township (of Almondbury), Clothier her father.
