Jane, daughter of Isaac was boarding with James and Alice Brooks (nee Mather) in 1871.  Jane was Alice's niece, but was only recorded as a boarder and unmarried.

Only one Jane Mather born in Bolton between 1844-48, and living in Little Bolton in 1861.

16 Sep 1871, Jane married John Gillibrand.  They lived in Halliwell untill 1876 and then moved back to Little Bolton.

On 24-Nov-1879, Isaac and Eliza Ann were baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton (Jane is indexed as Jean).

In 1891, Jane Gillibrand (40, Wid) was living at 1 Rivington Street, Little Bolton with her four children. 3 Rivington Street was recorded as the address when she married John Finch two years later.

Possible Marriages (1871-81) and 1881 census matches:
m. David Towler Mar-1871 - no David match
m. James Knowles Jun-1871 - no James match
m. John Gillibrand Sep-1871 - no match
m. Joseph Miller Dec-1873 - no match
m. Charles Challendar Mar-1875 - no match
m. James Ramsbotton Jun 1889 - no match
m. Thomas Earnshaw Dec 1880 - no match

As never married (can't find a matching record), then presumed died.  There are 5 possible deaths for Jane Mather in Bolton 1871-81.
1820 - 1874 Alice Mather 53 53 There are 5 possible marriages (and 6 deaths) of Alice Mather in Bolton (all at St Peter's) between the 1841 and 1851 census:  Possible marriages are:
Q2-1844 vol21,p73 - William Crowshaw
Q4-1844 vol21,p70 - James Brooks (matched)
Q3-1846 vol21,p59 - John Alen
9-May-1849 vol21,p91 - Henry Latham (also matched)
1851 - Richard Townley

In 1844, Alice married James Brooks. Her father is recorded as Samuel Mather, Weaver

Alice was living with her parents, Samuel and Alice Mather at Waterloo in 1841.  By 1851 she had married James Brooks, and was living at 6 Waterloo Fold, possibly the same place.

There's an Alice Mather, daughter of Samuel who married Henry Latham in 1849.  This is most likely another Alice, daughter of Samuel and Ellen Rigby.

John Mather (71), Hairdresser was at 2 Simpson Street. 1800 - 1888 John Mather 88 88 In 1841, Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38), all weavers were at Kay St in 1841.  Also present (seperate family were John Heaton (7) and Mary Mather (60).

In 1851, Thomas and John (52 & 50), both unmarried were living with their parents Joseph and Mary at 97 Kay Street, L.B.

From 1861 John (61) became a "Barber & Hair Cutter" and moved up the road with his father (83 and a cotton weaver)  from 97 to 204 Kay St.

In 1871, John (71, Unmarried) is a hairdresser at 2 Simpson Street, Little Bolton

In 1881, John (81, Widower) was a retired barber at 2 Simpson St.
1778 John Brooks 1787 Mary Kershaw 1854 - ~1856 James Brooks 2 2 There was no James with the family in the 1861 or 1871 census.  It is therefore assumed that James died as a child between 1854 and 1861 (there are 11 posible matches). 1851 - 1892 Alice Brooks 41 41 Alice was James and Alice's first daughter, and was named after her mother and grandmother.

Alice was with her parents at 1851 and 1861

Alice had left the family home and married by 1871 (aged 20).  She probably married 1868 or 1869 (several possible marriages in Bolton). Most likely is Alice A Brooks to Francis Smith in Q3/1869 (register office for non-conformists) but not Alice Brooks to William Bromley in Q1/1868 as she was 39 in 1881 so too old.

In 1871, Frank and Alice Smith (21 & 20) were at 6 Simpson Street, earlier home to our Mather Family.  John Mather (71 and a haridresser was at no.2).
1856 - 1895 Robert Brooks 39 39 In 1861, Robert (aged 5) was at 94 Blackburn Road (East Side), Little Bolton with parents and family.

In 1871, Robert (15) was a wool washer, still at 94 Blackburn Road.

It was George Brooks, not Robert, that married Ellen  Halstead in 1877 and had a daughter Alice soon after.  Robert married Betsy Halstead, also in 1877, also Bolton St John, but had no child.

In 1881. Robert and Betsy were living in Bolton (but no Alice).

In 1891 they were still in Little Bolton and had no children.
1858 - 1911 Samuel Brooks 53 53 Samuel was lodging with Henry and Betsy Bennett and family in 1881 at 48 Lee St, Bolton.

Samuel (single) was lodging with his older brother George and family in 1891 at 30 Howard Street, Little Bolton.

Samuel had lied about his age as 28 on his marriage certificate to Margaret.  They were both 5 years older!

Samuel was married (41, general labourer) in 1901. His son James (8) and dau Mary A (5) was with him, as well as his sister-in-law Betsy (widow, 44)
1844 George Brooks George was still living with parents James and Alice in 1871, but had married Elizabeth by 1881.  George had a daughter Ellen Hardy, aged 4 in 1881, so Elizabeth must have been married before. 1835 - 1907 John Brooks 72 72 John appears on 1851 census as a son of James.  James had been married before he was maried to Alice (and was a widower when he married Alice).  The only good match after that is the 1891 and 1901 census, where again, he is recorded as born in Turton.

Another John Brooks, an Iron Moulder, borm Manchester married Elizabeth abot 1859

John and Susannah "Brook" recorded in 1861 census, with the Bury family living with them.  Is this the right person?
1848 - 1896 Charles Brooks 48 48 Grandson of James, living with the family in 1851, but recorded as their son in 1861.

In total, Charles had 9 children.  All sons and no daughters.  What is the odds of that !
1846 - 1919 Elizabeth Hardy 73 73 Not at all sure of Elizabeth's maiden name.  On her marriage cert, her father was Thomas Hardy, so perhaps her daughter Ellen was illigimate.

Elizabeth Marsden was working as a servant in Blackburn in 1871.  Birth records do suggest that this may be her.
1876 Ellen Hardy Was named Ellen Brooks in 1891, living with George & Elizabeth.  However, in 1881 she was recorded as Ellen Hardy, Elizabeth's maiden name. 1872 Joseph Brooks Joseph was George's nephew, and was living with him in 1891

There are thee Joseph Brooks born in Bolton in the 1881 census.  Can't be son of Isaac, and Isaac's mother Esther (not Alice) was with them in 1881.  Also, he cant be the son of John, as theres already a John in the family.  Son of Charles and Anna (or Ann) fits perfectly, confirmed by Charles having his brother Samuel boarding with him in 1881.
1852 - 1889 Ann (Anna) Price 37 37 1878 Charles Brooks In 1900, Charles T Brooks marreid Elizabeth A Thornley at St Thomas, Halliwell.  This is another couple who had Mary L Brooks in 1901 and James A Brooks in 1903..

In 1902, Charles Brooks married Nancy Thornley at St John's, Bolton and had Annie Brooks in 1903.

Fanny E Brooks, born 1907 is one of these (above) children.
1876 John Brooks Johnwas boarding with John and Sarah Collins in Bolton, in 1901 1874 James Brooks 1880 - 1956 George Brooks 76 76 In 1911, George and Agnes were still in Lancashire. They later emigrated to the USA 1857 - 1920 Matilda Ainsworth 63 63 Matilda was living with her sister Eliza Ainsworth in 1901 with her 4 year old son Ernest Brooks. 1883 William Brooks 1886 Robert/ Alfred Brooks 1891 - 1891 Thomas Brooks 1896 Ernest Brooks Ernest, aged 14, was boarding with his widowed mother Matilda in 1911.  There were no other family members present. 1877 Catherine Haslam 1900 Frank Brooks 1855 Betsy Halstead Do not confuse with Betsy Halstead, daughter of William and Ann from Higher Booths, who married William Ashworth in 1879.

Although married, Betsy Brooks was living with her brothers Joseph and Thomas in 1881.  Robert did record her on the census at 2 Mulliner St, Little Bolton though, but she couldnt be in two places at one time!

Betsy was widowed in 1901, and living with Robert's brother Samuel and his family.  It's likely she remarried in 1902.
~1859 - ~1925 Margaret Hodgen 66 66 Margaret's father was William Hodgen, a slater.

Cant find her on 1891 census, even though she married in Bolton 9 months later.

Also, cant find in 1901, and Sameul has his sister-in-law Betsy (Robert's wife) with him in place of Margaret.

Possibly born in Manchester in 1859 (as found on 1901 census)
1893 James Brooks 1895 Mary Alice Brooks 1907 Annie Brooks 1808 William Brooks 1812 Sarah Brooks 1822 Nicholas Brooks 1823 Jane Longworth 1878 - 1976 Agnes Almond 98 98 Agnes was one of three sisters, Allice Ellen, Agnus and Mary Ann.  Alice Ellen married Robert Greenhalgh, and thad a son John Robert Greenhalgh. All were living togethjer in 1901 (including the parents John and Mary Almond). 1810 James Brooks Robert Brooks Ann or Alice ~1811 - 1875 James Brooks 64 64 In 1844, James was a Widower when he married Alice Mather.  Both were of fulll age.  The same year another James Brooks married Sarah Mather.

His first wife probably died about 1841, and after a suitable time found a new younger partner, Alice Mather.  She would have already been 6 or 7 months pregnant with George when they married on 6-Oct-1844.

Can not find him on 1841 census, so unable to match his first wife and family with son John (b.1835).

iIn 1851 James (39, Quarryman), Alice (31) and 4 children were at 6 Waterloo Fold, Little Bolton.

In 1861, James (51) and Alice (41) were at 94 Blackburn Road (East Side), Little Bolton with 5 children.
1861 - 1861 Happy Brooks Its probably the birth and death records for Happy Brooks are for this otherwise unknown daughter of Alice Mather, whom had a sister, Happy. 1808 - 1838 Hannah Rothwell 30 30 1810 James Brooks 1810 Alice 1840 Joseph Brooks 1823 Mary Brooks 1825 John Brooks 1845 Margaret Simpson Simpson 1871 Maggie S Simpson 1886 William Brook 1880 Thomas Brooks 1837 Ellen Parkes 1862 Mary Alice Brooks 1864 James Brooks 1868 Edith Brooks 1870 Annie Brooks 1873 Florence Brooks 1875 John H Brooks 1914 - 1987 Annie Brooks 73 73 1849 - 1920 Francis (Frank) Smith 71 71 In 1861, Francis: aged 12; born Ireland; was the son of James and Mary

In 1895, Francis married Pheobe Taziter at Bolton Christ Church
1874 Samuel Smith 1880 Edward Smith 1882 Alice Smith 1887 Kate (Catherine) Smith In 1891, Kate was 4.

In 1901, Catherine was 14, with her father and step-mother Pheobe
1877 - 1878 Francis D Smith 1 1 1884 - 1884 Margaret Smith 1872 - 1872 Mary A Smith 1838 Pheobe Taziter Married in 1895 aged about 57
