Bernard was born on April 21st, 1799 in Blackrod and his christening took place on May 12th, 1799 at St. Katherines (B'rod).1  Bernard's father was Joseph Riding and his mother was Molly Gorner. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Margaret, Mary and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
