Robert's father was William Medley and his mother was Caroline Pickles. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Pickles. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Zilpha. Robert and Zilpha were twins. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, Mary, Martha and Sarah.
