Lilly's father was George Alfred Mather and her mother was Ellen Guest. Her paternal grandparents were George Mather and Mary Marsh; her maternal grandparents were Guest Guest and Martha Ann Eckersley. She had three brothers and five sisters, named George, Harry, Fred, Eleanor, Emily, Martha, May and Ethel. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She died in Bolton.²
