John was born in 1801 in Worsley and his baptism took place there on April 19th, 1801.1  John's father was Ellis Mather and his mother was Ann Thornley. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Ellis, Alice and Betty.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
