Jane's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Mary Fairhurst. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Mather; her maternal grandparents were Henry Fairhurst and Betty. She had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Samuel, William, Eliza and Alice. She died whilst giving birth at the age of 25 in June 1871 in Little Bolton.²
