Benjamin's father was John Mather and his mother was Ellen Buckley. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Mather; his maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Leech. He had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Sarah. He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Samuel, John, Susannah, Margaret, Sarah and Ruth. He died at the age of 2 in December 1840 in Little Bolton.²
