Amos was born in 1861 in Entwistle.1  Amos' father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Jane.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Martha Kay. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Sarah and Nancy.  He was the oldest of the four children.
