Ernest's father was John Henry Liddicote and his mother was Lavinia Guest. His maternal grandparents were Guest Guest and Martha Ann Eckersley. He had a brother and seven sisters, named John, Emily, Ethel, May, Edith, Eliza, Minnie and Mary. He was the second youngest of the nine children.
