Martha was born in 1876.  Martha's father was James Howarth and her mother was Rebecca Greenhalgh.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Greenhalgh and Mary Grundy. She had a brother and three sisters, named James, Susannah, Bertha and Emily.  She was the oldest of the five children.
