Emily was born in 1893 in Darcy Lever.1   Emily's father was James Howarth and her mother was Rebecca Greenhalgh.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Greenhalgh and Mary Grundy. She had a brother and three sisters, named James, Martha, Susannah and Bertha.  She was the youngest of the five children.
