Bertha was born in 1890.1  Bertha's father was James Howarth and her mother was Rebecca Greenhalgh.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Greenhalgh and Mary Grundy. She had a brother and three sisters, named James, Martha, Susannah and Emily.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
