John, known as Jack, was born in December 1882 in Birkenhead.¹

Jack's father was Thomas Hale and his mother was Anne Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Richard Brereton and Esther Eddowes. He had six brothers and four sisters, named George, Dave, Tom, Ted, Bill, Henry, Mary, Aggie, Annie and Flo. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 67 in 1949.²
