Betty's father was Frederick (Will) William Dittmer and her mother was Mary (May) Elizabeth Newman. Her paternal grandparents were Frederick (Fred) Christopher Dittmer and Maud Seymour Lindop. She had a brother named Fred. She was the younger of the two children.

- Was known as Betty in her youth. Mary Newman was her mother, who came from County Meath in 1914 to go into service in a 'big house' in Liverpool They lived in Knotty Ash most of her life.
