John was born in December 1892 in West Derby.1  John's father was Johann (Chris) Heinrich Christoph Dittmer and his mother was Katharina (Margaret) Margaretha Maria Heuer.  His paternal grandparents were Christian Fredrich Dittmer and Maria Luise Bliesener. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named George, William or Will, Fred, Henry, Chris, Charles, James, Mary, Margaret, Lizzie, Catherine and Evelyn.  He was the fifth youngest of the thirteen children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named George and Dorris.  He died due to a childhood disease at the age of 3 in June 1896 in West Derby.1
