James was born in 1836 in Ellesmere and his christening took place there on February 4th, 1836.1  James' father was Samuel Dawson and his mother was Mary Rhodes. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Margaret, Ellen, Sarah and Eliza.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
