James was born in 1773 in Highfield and his christening took place on January 8th, 1773 in Independent (Highfield).1  James' father was Jonathon Crosland and his mother was Betty Liversedge.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland and <unknown>. He had three brothers named Dan, Joseph and Charles.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 25 in 1798.2
