Mathew's father was Thomas Brown and his mother was Mary Ann Postans. His paternal grandparents were William Brown and Mary; his maternal grandparents were William Clements and Ann (Anne) Postans. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, John, Arthur, Mary, Nell, Elizabeth and Jane. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 74 on March 12th, 1957.¹
