Nellie's father was William Thomas Brereton and her mother was Ellen Bird. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Margaret Edwards. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, George, Henry, James, Margarette, Annie, Carrie, Rebecca and Ellen. She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children. She died in Tilston.¹
