John was born on June 16th, 1810 in Harthill and his christening took place there on July 8th, 1810.1  John's father was Richard Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Heywood.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Mary Ledsham; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Haywood and Alice Gregson. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named William, Richard, Richard, John, Abraham, George, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Betty, Sarah and Kitty.  He was the fifth youngest of the thirteen children.  He died at the age of 69 on March 27th, 1880 in Bickerton.  He was buried on March 31st, 1880 at All Saints, Harthill.2 2
