William was born in 1846 in Kearsley.1   William's father was Thomas Benyon and his mother was Mary Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Peter, John, Robert, Charlotte, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
