John was born in 1841 in Clifton.1   John's father was Thomas Benyon and his mother was Mary Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Peter, William, Robert, Charlotte, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
