Richard was born in 1826 in Bolton and his christening took place on June 3rd, 1827 at St. Peters (Bolton).1 2  Richard's father was George Barrow and his mother was Nancy Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were John Barrow and Ann. He had five brothers and six sisters, named John, Betty, James, George, Thomas, Margaret, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Celine and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-brother named Edwin.
