John was born in 1869 in St. Helens.1   John's father was James Barrow and his mother was Hannah Roydes.  His paternal grandparents were George Barrow and Nancy Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Levi, George, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
