George was born in 1838 in Wigan and his christening took place on November 4th, 1838 in Bolton.1 2  George's father was George Barrow and his mother was Nancy Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were John Barrow and Ann. He had five brothers and six sisters, named John, Betty, Richard, James, Thomas, Margaret, Eliza, Mary, Nancy, Celine and Ellen.  He was the tenth oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-brother named Edwin.
