Robert was born in June 1863 in Bolton.1  Robert's father was John Allen and his mother was Sarah Walkden.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Allen and Sarah Carter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, John, Joseph, James and Sarah. He had two half-sisters named Alice and Agnes.
