Joseph was born on September 24th, 1809 in Bolton and his christening took place on September 24th, 1809 in Deane.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Sarah Carter.  His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Welsbey. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, Benjamin, William, George, John, George, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
