John was born in March 1851 in Bolton.1  John's father was John Allen and his mother was Sarah Walkden.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Allen and Sarah Carter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Richard, Joseph, James, Robert and Sarah. He had two half-sisters named Alice and Agnes.
