Elizabeth was born in 1796 in Bolton and her christening took place on May 12th, 1796 at St. Peters (Bolton).1  Elizabeth's father was Joseph Allen and her mother was Sarah Carter.  Her paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Welsbey. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Benjamin, William, Joseph, George, John, George, Sarah and Jane.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
